castorbeans

These beautiful plants are over 5' tall and still growing. My son in Virginia gave me the seeds which he has saved from his own garden.

THANK YOU BONNIE... I WILL HAVE PICS ON THE WEEKEND.  I'M LEARNING HOW TO UPLOAD FROM MY DAUGHTER... LIKE A CHILD IN A CANDY STORE... SO EXCITED.

Joan, if your vine looks like the leaves on these castor bean plants, then it probably is a Virginia Creeper.  The other plant that has a leaf like this is a wild strawberry, but it would have runners like a cultivated strawberry plant does, not a vine.

Hi Joan, The castor bean plants are not winter hardy, I started mine in my little greenhouse.  I transplanted them after frost into the large terracotta pots that are open at the end, I think they were some sort of drain tile. My son plants his right in the ground.  His plants blew over during the nasty storm that blew through Virginia but he just pushed them back up and they are fine.  I would use gloves when touching the seeds, just to be safe.  I love the tropical look also, that is the closest I will get to that, living in Michigan :)

CASTOR BEANS, ARE THEY WINTER HARDY SINCE YOU STARTED THEM IN FEBRUARY ?  I HAVE 10 SEEDS.  I WILL PUT ABOUT 7  IN THE GROUND AND 3 IN POTS AFTER SEEING YOUR POTS. DOES YOU SON HAVE THEM IN THE GROUND OR POTS ?  ALSO, DO YOU NEED TO WEAR GLOVES WHEN HANDLING THE SEEDS ?... I SAW PICS OF CASTOR BEANS IN THE GROUND AND THE BUSHES OR VERY FULL AND THICK. I LOVE THE TROPICAL LOOK... THANKS FOR THE INFO... HAPPY GARDENING.

This is my first year growing these plants. I started the seeds in February and it took several weeks before they sprouted. I am impressed by the heartiness of the plants and the wonderful stem colors and cool looking seed pods. The seeds are very toxic and MUST be kept out of the reach of children. I am not sure what the vine plant could be.

I HAVE A SMALL VINE GROWING IN MY YARD THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE  YOUR PLANTS. THE VINE IS  RED AND THE LEAVES ARE GREEN IN A CLUSTER OF 5 LEAVES.  COULD THIS PLANT ALSO COME IN A VINE ?  ITS GROWING ALL OVER MY YARD.  MY CASTOR SEEDS ARE STILL IN THE PACK. I LOVE THE PLANT BECAUSE IT LOOKS TROPICAL. DOES IT DROP A LOT OF SEEDS ?

WOW... I JUST BOUGHT SOME CASTOR BEANS FROM GURNEY'S SEED & NURSERY.I PLAN TO PUT THEM IN THE GROUND ON THE BACKEND OF MY PROPERTY.  I WILL TRY ONE IN A CONTAINER.  THEY GROW BUSHY IN THE GROUND.  THEY LOOK TROPICAL. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKES TO GROW FROM SEEDS ?

I saw these same plants in Matoon Ky at a favorite Amish store and bakery we frequent in the summertime, I love them but never tried to grow them, they are so neat looking I think and I really like the colorful stems! Very nice display.
