Carolyn, To answer your question, the rose standard that you are viewing is a KnockOut rose graph. I have five of these, and the rest of the rose buses are also KnockOuts, both singe and double petaled type. They are very hardy, but succumb to fungus. Another rose that I have been made privy to by a retired rosarian from the Mo Botanical Gardens (Formally Shaw's Garden), brought to my attention another hardy rose, as I was looking for a climber, it is called, "Ramblin Red, by William Radler, and can be found at the Star Roses.org site, and is a bare root wholesale company. So you might want to research this rose type. I had carpet roses in my garden in NC, but they were unruley, so I am hesitant to plant them in this garden, but they can be very lovely. It is interesting that you are concerned that you live in Chicagoland, and am worried about the wind. From what I understand from this retired Rosarian, the Ramblin Red, may be as useful to you, as she thinks it will be for me. Let me know if you decide on this rose...remember what I have shared, is a climber, so if you want bushes, you might want to go with KnockOuts. Let me know. Patricia

Wow, spectacular. Which one is this?
I grow carpet roses and find them SO easy. I have a hot pink and a dark red ones. About 11 in all. They take very little care. I feed them a systemic rose food that fertilizes and protects them all at the same time. In the fall I cut them back and cover them with rose cones. They do wonderfully this way. I am in the Chicagoland area in a new subdivision so am subject to some brutal west winds in the winter, but they do very well here.

Carolyn, I could just scream, as this is the second message I am writing. The first was very long, with a lot of info, now I am just f'mished. For some reason, this website just cancelled my message out, and I was back to my own home page, maddening! It is 2:41AM, and just do not have the time to do it all again, have to go to bed...I'll try again another day. Sorry!

Welcome new friend. Love your roses, they are beautiful. I have not tried growing roses because of all of the work I heard they took. I might change my mind after reading a recent article and finding that there is now a knockout rose that is pretty much maintenance free. Have you grown this type of rose and is it really true? Do you know of any types of roses that won't take a lot of work and are hardy for our zone 5?
