Geranium (Pelargonium, botanically speaking) variety 'Freckles' doing what it's been doing every single day since early November: BLOOMING! Nine long, easy months of effortless color, so why not grow a bunch?? They struggle/melt in the summer so I sometimes bring a cutting or two indoors to save over summer and replant in autumn (I usually replace them with vincas for summer). Such a great, long season of bloom for so little effort!

Comment by Grant Meyer USDA zone 9 on April 20, 2012 at 3:27pm Thanks, Nenita! These are effortless here for 9 months of easy color, buuuuuuut if we want to keep them year after year, they really need to come indoors for summer and then go back outside in autumn. Most people here grow them as autumn, winter, and spring plants, and then replace them for summer. Thanks again and great job overwintering yours (here we have to oversummer them, LOL). Happy gardening!
Comment by Nenita Franck on April 20, 2012 at 1:06pm I've tried and it is not effortless for me in the PNW. I found some that someone threw away last year and I planted them in pots. I put them in a protected area and they survived! They are leggy and I'm waiting for them to grow more leaves.

Comment by Grant Meyer USDA zone 9 on April 19, 2012 at 2:08pm Thanks for the nice comments, all, I really appreciate them. Debbie, your geranium looks like the exact same type as mine (mine is the variety 'Freckles'). Yours looks exactly the same. Nice! Good luck propagating yours--keep us posted. :)
Barbara, you're right as usual. The only reason I mention bringing in cuttings is that it's an alternative to bringing in a big plant. Most of mine are in the ground, but a couple are in pots that I *could* bring in if I could find the room. I may just do cuttings to save space. Here in the Phoenix area we save geraniums year to year by bringing them indoors for summer, not winter. How crazy is that? They do great here November through early June or so, and then they get cranky in the heat, so that's the time to bring plants or cuttings indoors. I do love this one so I will probably bring in plants/cuttings. I may even start a small jar of cuttings in water before my Hawaii trip so I can have something interesting to look forward to? We'll see! In any case, thanks for the fun comments, I sure appreciate them. Debbie, hopefully you can find more on ebay or elsewhere now that you have an ID name! Do keep us posted, all. Take care!
Comment by Joy on April 18, 2012 at 10:46am Wow! Picture-perfect! Beautiful.
Grant, Love looking at the photos of your garden. It's amazing, must give you alot of pleasure. I saw this photo of your geranium and stopped dead in my tracks (so to speak). I have a geranium on my front porch that I bought several years ago, no idea what it is called but I love, love, love it and have been trying to find out what kind it is so that I could get more for my yard (finally gave up and am trying to propagate it instead. Then I saw your photo and I think it's the same variety of geranium as mine. Mine is huge, about 3 feet tall at it's highest point. A little leggy but still beautiful. I am attaching a photo of mine to get your opinion as to whether it's the same variety. Thanks ... Happy Gardening :-)
Comment by Barbara Brown Z8 Al. on April 17, 2012 at 7:04pm What a great Geranium! I've never seen one this color before, it is gorgeous! You said that you take a couple of cuttings in for the winter to keep for the next yr. Can't you just bring in the whole plant, or you don't want to keep the big plant? What I'm really asking is, can you keep the Geranium as a houseplant over the winter? I've never tried it, but I did keep my red one in an unheated greenhouse & it did just fine. I know you wouldn't want this plant to die, love it!
