January pansies in talavera pot

Bright yellow pansies in a colorful talavera style glazed pot, also containing a 'Thai Lime' citrus tree outside on my patio. The 'Thai lime' tree is grown for the aromatic foliage, rather than the small warty fruit. These pansies bloom all autumn, winter, and spring here and smell wonderful.

Hey Grant another update for the Pansies.......hope I'm not boring you :)...as you can see they've grown so much.At the moment they are recovering from the lanscapers blower that came by a couple days ago and he actually pointed the thing tight at them! I mean is he blind?! I saw him point it at the soil under the bushes and a cloud of dirt rising to the eaves, those people don't know what they're doing.I told them they practically lifted them fr the roots and to watch it,they said they would. We shall see, in the meantime I ran out of screen amterial I used to protect the Coleus they almost decimated 3 wks ago.I guess I need to make a trip to Home Depot.I will watch them like a hawk.:)...if you want to see some nice close-ups come to my page.Happy Gardening! And Happy Easter:)

Lila, they're doing fabulously for you!!  I love them.  Thanks so much for the update.  I see tons of flower buds coming in as well, and I think I even see a little seedling popping up too?  Looking great!  Mine are still growing and blooming like crazy too.  They're good here from October through April/May or so.  That's a nice, long easy season.  Yours are fantastic!  Happy gardening!

Hey Grant just wanted to share my new Pansies w/ you:)

They have grown, bloomed much more since then will post more later if you'd like.Just went outside and it was so gusty! 40-50 miles per hr winds for  today the forcast said Wheeew ! System fr North aproaching- My plants are secure but the wind makes them bend a bit when the gust is too strong I thought the Hydrangea was going to snap!---.not fun to watch--:(.... we are under a strong wind advisory til 5pm ,had to put my Pansies under cover near the stairwell, I think they'll be alright there:)

Hey Grant: Yes I have noticed they love sun,we where having a heat wave here when I saw them at the garden center, not hot as you said just warmer than usual and they looked great, remarkable for a little flower who has such resistance to cold........your compliments make me blush Grant lol:).....that's one of the funnest parts of gardening for me,getting to know each plants personality and respecting it.You give them what they need they reward you ten times over....I  appreciate the details on the sun and deadheading, good pic and I just remembered I read in one of my books to always take off a couple of leaves together w/ the faded bloom.......fascinating:):)

Pedicel.....I like that word:):)

Have a happy gardening day!

Hiya Lila and all,

Looking good!  Thanks for the pic and update.  I learn soemthing every time I log in here too, plus it's just so fun to talk plants, thanks to you and everyone else too for making Garden-Share such a fun place to visit.  Your little violas look really nice, and the pansy looks good too.  Great job!  I grow my pansies and violas in full full sun in winter.  Once it starts getting really warm I move them if possible into a spot of afternoon shade, or I just accept that they'll fade faster than those in shadier spots, but when it's not hot, they love SUN.

You're good to notice that a bougie probably wants less water than a pansy or a viola.  There's no teaching that sort of smarts.  Great job thinking about that.

Here's a pic from the internt of someone deadheading a pansy bloom.  You want to cut low on the pedicel (the bloom's stalk) to make sure that the bloom doesn't make any seeds (until it's late in the season and you WANT to save seed or let some ripen and scatter).  You can use your fingers, or scissors or whatever, but the key is to cut low enough on the single flower stem to make sure the bloom and any seed pod are snipped off.  I think this pic does a good job showing it.

Take care, happy gardening, and thanks for the smiles.

Grant

oh I forgot to ask, when you deadhead do you snip all the way down or only to the next little nodule? Thanks:)

Hey Grant,Leah,Lyn,all:Thanks for the compliments guys!:):):).Yes I love this color combo too.Have not seen it since. This yr they had some in maroon w/yellow.I regret not getting any,but I've got a dr's appt tomorrow and the garden center is nearby so guess where I'm going?! I'm running out of room,I wonder if it's ok to squeeze them in a bit or would it harm them? I can tuck them in at the base of a Bougainvilla pot or the one with the Daylily Stella D'oro but they face the hot afternoon sun head on from noon to 4:45pm so might be too much, but it is a larger pot w/ more soil, don't know, would look cute.Oh but Bougas  like  to dry out well in between waterings so maybe that option is out.Back to the Daylily. You can tell I'm wacked about Violas, but I feel like the cool spring weather is escaping us,It's just too hot too soon oh God!:)Thanks for reassuring me Grant,I'll definately deadhead:)...Well here it is......I know it deosn't look like much but hopefully it will fill out.Grant if you look closely you will see that the Pansy on the rt of the purple on is a bit limp,it was more so this afternoon, but I just went outside to see and it's perky again and GROWING:):)The purple one never limps I guess it's more heat resistant variety. For a minute there I thought I would lose her ,I'm glad I resisted the temptation to water more as I remembered your advice on rotting.Grant you are already being a blessing to me,I am so glad and thankfull  I found you and for all of my GS friends. What blessing to know a site like GardenShare and get to know people who are passionate about God's creation.I never cease to be in awe of that little Pansy face looking up at me w/ all His greatness behind that beauty:)
