Mid Atlantic Hot Season Arrives

Growing season in mid-Atlantic is beginning officially today, as far as night time temperatures and ground temperatures are concerned. I have 80 tomatoes, five my dad started very early with beef steaks on them already, and several more with lots of blooms. This year I planted beef steak, roma, yellow german, Mr. Stripy, Early Wonder, Arkansas Marvel, yellow pear, Dolly Parton, Cherry and some little heirloom Italian seedless that my friend gave to me.Our asparagus season is in full swing, and…See More

Kilts, Violins, Spinach and Groundhogs

Posted on May 6, 2009 at 9:25pm 3 Comments

Young pup that I was at least mentally, every chance I got to garden growing through the years I threw myself into it like a hounddog in a kilt. Some people say I've forgotten more than I've ever known. Well, me too but I've also planted more than I'll ever remember.

Somewhere along the way though I got me some pads on my paws, some callus on my knees that has at times been as green as spinach--which I love by the way. Those pads were made from traveling, working, succeeding,… Continue

When we plant that first rose and get the garden bug, where do we go from there? I've loved landscaping and gardening my entire life and here I'll share part of that adventure. While our personalities and druthers influence where we go with our gardens greatly, for busy people sometimes it is nice to stay real with our gardening efforts.

Asparagus

Posted on May 4, 2009 at 10:50pm 6 Comments

Asparagus is one of the most delicious vegetables imaginable. I started about six years ago with the help of Scott Walker of Jersey Asparagus Farms installing three big patches in my gardens. Asparagus patches well done and tended--yes they can be work at first--last 15 years!

1-A very large potato like furrow should be prepared adding organic matter and sand if necessary(clay).

2-Order top quality two year old crowns(I cheat some but will skip that here).

3-The furrows… Continue

Garden 2009

No matter what happens, this year's garden will be a little gray around the edges. My dad who is my best friend and garden mate passed away in Februrary--just before I opened the greenhouse. We've gardened for years together each year making it more and better; and, moving from field-crop thinking to high end crops.

A few years ago I started installing to the letter asparagus patches per the folks at Jersey Asparagus Farms who jumped in with consultation--thank you Scott Walker. This… Continue

hello Al thanks for posting on my page. I need to photograph my pole beans, some are almost 15 feet tall and I think if my bamboo poles were longer they would have grown taller. My only problem this year is keeping the cucumbers alive, the bugs keep killing them. I dont use chemicals so it is tough.

Good morning, Al! Hope all is well for you today. I need your help: we have this really nasty invasive vine that we have been battling for years now. I really thought we had it whipped this year, but as of last week, it is cropping up all over our garden again. It has sort of copper/green varigated leaves and, when it comes up, sticks right straight up. In no time, it will shoot up 1-2 feet tall and it has thorns all over it. When we try to just pull it out, it snaps off right where you've grabbed it. So, we've tried digging. Well, I am thoroughly convinced that it must be growing up from China or something, because I cannot dig deep enough to get to the bottom of it. Thus far, the best I have been able to do is dig as deep as I can and chop it off. But, alas, it always comes back. I plan to take a sample to the extension service to see if they can identify it, but I thought you might know.

Thanks Al, I did not know I had to mound the dirt. Should I cut them back this year or just let them go and mount next year. It is just a small square patch like my grandmother use to do. Thanks again Janice

OK AL, I planted asparagus last year...did not cut it back..this year it is thin like a pencil and in the past week grew to be 24" tall. What am I doing wrong? Or do I have to wait another year for a harvest? HELP!!! Janice z5/6 PA

Sorry about your loss. I can only imagine gardening w/o my hubby. Wouldn't be the same.

Thanks for the asparagus tips. Bought these plants last year, they are doing better. But i do think of gardening as a learning experience, too.
Happy Gardening!

Awesome!!! Thanks. We are a family of 9 and right now I only have space for 30 plants. My house is on a corner and sits up from the street, so we have a slope/hill on two sides that I would love to fill with strawberries so we wouldn't have to mow. My dog got to the box and the two different varieties got mixed together. Amazing how he ate the box and the plastic bags, but the strawberries were pretty much in tact. I tried to differentiate between the two and put the June bearing on one end and the everbearing on the other, but we will see. I love your system, you should write an e-book with pictures and more detail and sell it on-line, like that grapevine dude does!

Just put strawberries in on our slope leading to my garden...it never got mowed! So, I'm assuming when they flower this year I pinch the flowers? I've also heard not to let them get more than two runners. Any tips and advice would be much appreciated!!!

Al, you really must post some photos for the rest of us to admire! I can't even fathom the enormity of what you and your dear Dad have created! Our little garden is about 900 square feet, with a separate corn plot of I guess about 15' x 30' (a very rough estimate). I know just as surely as I breathe that some rookie mistake will bring tragic ending to at least some portion of our crop. I also know just as surely that we will rejoice so much of our successes that we won't waste time with regrets but, rather, will file those ugly little mishaps away under "learning experiences." I can't wait to start hauling in baskets of fresh tomatoes, peppers, squash, peas, green beans and...well, you get the picture. Our humble goal this year is to put up enough green beans and tomatoes to carry us through until next years garden. Last year we only put things up in the freezer and dried some peppers, but we are ready to try our hand at canning this go around. I see you grow asparagus. That is something that we very much want to try but the details are overwhelming!

Well, again, I think I am speaking for many when I say, "Please post some pictures!!!" Happy gardening, my cyber-eco friend! ......Contessa
