While the gardener is away, the garden... misbehaved!

Posted on July 7, 2009 at 12:00pm 1 Comment

I went out of town for a few weeks starting in mid- June and into July. Scary thing to do for a gardener. I always sigh with resignation when leaving during gardening months that I will miss 'this or that blooming' while I am away. I had a dear friend stop by to water but he is not a gardener so... I was kind of nervous to see what I would find when I returned. I suppose I should have asked a gardener, but he offered and I knew my gardener friends were busy. It was true, I did suffer some… Continue

The Grateful Gardener

Posted on June 9, 2009 at 2:00pm 1 Comment

I noticed that roses this year are 'happy' everywhere I look. We had a very snowy winter and a late spring. I have no idea why they seem so full and lush this year but I am waiting with great anticipation for mine to burst open. I think it is interesting for reasons known, and unknown, that certain plants can have "a very good year" and then take a rest the next. I have taken note of this over the years and decided that rather than being dissapointed for what isn't as productive as it was 'last… Continue

Love to garden, love to learn, love to share!

Posted on April 28, 2009 at 11:30am 6 Comments

I am a self taught gardener who soaks up books, magazines, visits to others gardens, residential and public and love to talk to 'old gardeners' to gather their wisdom. I have no idea where my love for gardening came from except that I love to create beauty in many forms and my garden is one of my favorite canvases. I am not a timid gardener and am willing to make mistakes and experiment. I have learned a lot from that. I do carefully observe and read like crazy but I don't get too paralized by… Continue

Aleatha - this is my 3rd summer at this house and the first one with bunny issues. I think there used to be a family of stray cats living a few doors down under a neighbor's shed. I don't see the cats anymore...but I do see the bunnies now. :( And a few of my perrenials have suffered because of that.

Aleatha,

I was at the opening of the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago recently. The new access ramp is wonderful. I have yet to see the new structures and look around the garden in Millenium Park this year. There is some catching up to do for me. Your idea of a get together for gardeners sounds great. Please let me know your plans.

I am currently working on a pergola gate. I might be able to call it a "Cloud Gate" but will look nothing like the "Bean". It will represent, stylized, clouds of foliage more than a legume. My previous gate became inoperable in freezing weather.

The stream is pondless and has a pump at the base and pumps it up to the falls. It is also connected to one of our underground water zones so when if the water evaporates from the heat the water system automatically gives it more water. Once it is up and running in the spring we have NO maintenance at all! Just enjoy. I also finished a video on construction and you can hear the wonderful sound this stream makes.:)

Aleatha, Hi - yes we did put this stream in last year 2008. It was difficult to get the right curve of the hill but it turned out wonderfully. The sound is fabulous! Sitting by the cottage is very peaceful and on cold nights we have a fit pit that was installed into the blue stone patio. We have the stream running 24 hours a day. And because it is pondless there is very little maintenance. Building our own private paradise!

Hi Aleatha, I really enjoyed your home and Garden pictures...I can claim my love for gardens came from my mother...she could grow anything and when she moved (after they retired) the neighbors came in and even removed the dirt...my three daughters, son and sister love their flowers too so I guess it's in our genes, maybe we never did outgrow playing in the dirt....Happy Gardening!!

Aleatha, I did make the tray (planter) just by hollowing out some sand and using sand mix and some reinforcement. Holes were drilled into the bottom after the tray was set up enough to handle. I leave the inside rough so that roots have something to hold onto. Some of those trays are rather expensive found pieces. The Botanic Garden usually hosts the Midwest Bonsai Show on the third weekend of August. It may be called The Midwest Bonsai Alliance. I believe you live close by. I have not been there in a few years. Roger

Red in the garden!
Aleatha, there was to be a competition on another forum by the above title and I shot these pics for a laugh! The competition was cancelled and I thought I'd post them anyway! :D By the way, I love red and wear it a lot! Thanks for your interest.
