How is everything going Aleta? Have you planted your garden for the fall yet. Its still hot here in S. Texas but getting cooler weather. Getting my garden ready, weeded and stuff. My Sammy horse is going to the trainer today for 30 days, boy is he in for a surprise (learning behavior problem) but will get him straightened out. Hope to hear from you.

there are shavings for birds at the feed stores usually. Be careful what you put in with your chickens because they will eat almost anything, including paper.

Aleta, the barred rock has a little blue specks in it. The red light is good when they decide to get mad at each other and peck (if there is blood), they don't see the blood and it drys up. If the other chickens saw blood they would peck that chicken maybe to death. When my rooster got picked on, I picked him up and held the hurt till it dried up and it heals real fast. I hope that I have not confused you.

by the way, congratulations on your eggs. The dark red ones are from your rhode island red.

Aleta, just add more hay and yes, you can add carpet. The only thing is they sometimes poop in the nest and then you have a mess. Make the nest like a little compartment with lots of hay and they will dig a hole to lay their eggs. In the winter, put a red light facing their nest for heat and the red is not bright for their eyes. I hope that I helped you out.

I had a plymouth rock but she suffered every summer and after having her for 3 years, she died of natural causes. Your chicks look like they are 6 months old? Most of mine are older. Here is my oldest Rhode Island

From first hand, my female Rhode Island Red turned into a male with spurs and feathers. She does not crow, yet. I have heard that if you have ALL roosters someone will turn into a female and start laying eggs. Here is a picture of my female and you can make your own decision.

Don't know how I missed this when you posted but thanks anyway. It, like mine, is a pretty unique name so I thought I'd ask. Have a great weekend.

Aleta, I have a first cousin in Iowa who's married to a Gehrke. Thought I'd mention because it isn't a common name around here at least.

wow your peeps are growing so quickly! I love to see how different they look. I also have my first barred rock. I am interested in hearing about how your sexlink lays. I have heard they don't even slow down for winter.
