For Those Troubled by Deer - News Item from the UK

Posted on September 23, 2010 at 4:47am 0 Comments

Delinquent deer can't stand Radio 4

Gardeners have unleashed a secret weapon in their fight against delinquent deer – Radio 4.

Allotment owners in Pitstone, Buckinghamshire, have set up alarms that blast out the [BBC] station after realising the intruders could not stand human voices, especially those of Libby Purves and The Archers.

Green Manure - a question

Posted on August 27, 2010 at 2:43pm 2 Comments

Without getting into a big discussion about rotating the place one plants tomatoes (although if you'd like to comment on that please do), this is a question I am asking not just for myself but for my sister.

Does anyone have any recommendations/information/stories on green manure? Do you plant it? It is to enrich the soil, yes? I have a decent sized garden and have been able to not plant tomatoes in *quite* the same place every year, but some people just don't, i.e. my sister.…

Thingamadig - Review

Posted on July 21, 2010 at 2:36pm 1 Comment

In a nutshell, the most useful gardening tool I have ever bought.

I'm a sucker for a gadget. I'm also a sucker for most of whatever my favourite kitcheny, gadgety store Lakeland sells. But this beauty, was a fantastic purchase. Like a lot of Londoners, I have very clay-ey soil. Not a problem. I used it all afternoon, weeding (cuts right through to the roots), making furrows for planting seeds, digging holes to plant some…

Molasses in the Garden

Posted on June 29, 2010 at 12:02pm 2 Comments

Hello all -

So I read a very interesting post by Melody in Texas in the "Bugs" group about dried molasses as general overall soil improvement. I have spent a good part of the afternoon pondering where on earth I could find this here but I don't think it's very likely. However, I have now read on other websites that sugar would do just fine if you can't find dried molasses. I am very interested in trying this! Does anyone have any experience? Also, thinking about it, although…

Thanks, Alison!  This time of the year, it's particularly nice to read of hot summer gardening Down Under - my Auckland sister is having a wonderful time this year with her tomatoes. It encourages me to keep digging and manure-spreading here, in the dreary damp!
