Gardening is an Additction!

I really got into flower gardening about 10 years ago. I had no idea what I was doing but knew when I was in the dirt I was were I should be. There is such a spiritual freedom out there with plants and soil.
I had a really wonderful cottage garden established when I became ill 6 years ago. We had to move to another home, smaller and easier to manage, due to my illness. I am now in the process of re-establishing my beds. Although it is more difficult for me to garden, I am determined to not allow my disability interfere with my passion. I have "completed"(yeah right!) one bed and and continue the process of tearing out landscaping bushes (yuck) and replacing with my own touches.
Since becoming ill, I can no longer work outside the home. I am now a stay at home mom and I home educate my four daughters. We are a warm, neighborly, and happy group. Laugh a lot and truly enjoy or family life. We have many blessings for which to be thankful. I do a lot of sewing, baking ( I make all our breads), and scratch organic cooking. I really love finding new things to make instead of buy.

I have been a big supporter of eating local. I have been apprehensive about a veggie garden because of the workload it would entail. But, in 2009, I decide to just jump in and give it a go. I have loads of heirloom organic seeds and we are in full seed growing, tilling, composting , doubting ourselves veggie garden land. :) I am very excited every morning I go out to water/weed. Looking for those new "babies" is so fun.

I am sure I am going a bit over the top with the amount of planting I have planned. But, I have never been one to go half way. I am hoping to produce enough to share and store for winter. We have also joined our local organic CSA to make sure we have enough for winter.

Veggies, Veggies Everywhere!

Posted on June 24, 2009 at 12:57pm 0 Comments

The veggie garden has changed so much since my last blog. We have begun to eat our lettuces (actually we are on the third cutting this week), and some of our onions. We mange a handful of strawberries every morning. It has been just wonderful!

We harvested or first two big beautiful chioggia beets this morning and the girls just ate them up! It is so wonderfully rewarding to start something from a tiny seed and feed your children. Even more wonderful is the fact that they see from… Continue

So excited!

Yesterday while weeding my fledgling veggie garden I noticed some tiny, and I mean tiny, baby carrots and beets peeking up at me. I am so excited...even today, I had to look at them a few more times. I was afraid I had planted the seeds too shallow or too deep or something. But there they are! WOO HOO!

I also found two tiny pea plants and a couple of spinach plants had popped up as well. YAY!

Laugh if you like but keep in mind this is my very first veggie garden and I am… Continue

Veggie Beds So Far..We are such newbies!!

Well, I can at least say we have potatoes:

and we have cabbage and broccoli

and we've managed some little baby lettuce

Not much action with pea, spinach, carrots or beets. hhhhmmm.... Not sure what's up there. It's been nearly 14 days and I see no movement. I guess we'll see. I was really hoping to grow… Continue

I am thrilled about the garden shed.  It is a recycled play house that is over 50 years old.  I am looking forward to doing some more with it this spring.  By the time I got it painted inside and out fall was here.  But I have lots of plans.

Congratulations on the new baby.  What a wonderful addition to your family!  I am sure she will share your love of gardening. Square foot gardening is a great idea.  I guess that is what I do because I have four beds out by my shed.  Makes it easier to plan what I want to plant.  Looking forward to seeing pictures of your garden.

Andi, your gardens are awesome. For a "Newbie" you are quite successful. And you are starting to get veggies. Wow! I also find that gardening soothes my soul. When I am out there I am so involved that I forget other things for a bit. And I also run out every morning to see if anyone has peeked out. I didn't realize how much my things has grown until I was reading what you wrote and my pictures were up there. Guess I need to post some updates. In one of my pictures my son and daughter-in-law were building something for me to compost in. They were visiting from Indianapolis where they live on a tiny lot and grow so many things. They are totally organic and also into eating locally whenever they can. They actually grow enough to sell to some restaurants in downtown Indie. My daughter-in-law started a winter farmer's market there. We have been to it several times and it is amazing what you can do even in the winter. The very best was the sauerkraut! And all local folks!
