Help with identifying this tree for a friend

A friend of mine sent me this picture of a tree that grew up (very quickly) in one of her garden beds next to the house. Any ideas what kind of tree it is? Sorry if the pictures are more clear, she just forwarded them to me from her phone. Thanks in advance!See More

Could it be any hotter?

Posted on June 25, 2009 at 7:32am 3 Comments

Wow, yesterday we broke a record of 104 degrees... in the shade. This heat is killing me. Trying to keep everything alive and happy is very hard with these record-breaking temps and no rain in over 30 days. I moved everything into the shade because even the sun-loving plants were suffering leaf burn. My soaker hoses are working overtime!

I've added photos of the rescued Hosta and Celosia that survived Hurricane Ike. What they looked like when I dug them up and transferred them into containers and what they look like now a month later. I'm so happy they survived and are doing well!

The Wonder of Nature

Posted on May 2, 2009 at 8:23am 3 Comments

As some of you know I am starting over this year after Hurricane Ike wiped out my garden last September. Yesterday morning while doing my morning drinking coffee, walking through the garden routine when I noticed two plants poking up through the old garden area. Now, this particular garden bed was a shade garden. What the wind hadn't destroyed the 30-year old trees that fell upon it destroyed the rest. We removed the trees a week later and left the entire garden bed to ruins to deal with it… Continue

Blooming

Posted on April 24, 2009 at 7:10am 3 Comments

I just woke up, grabbed my cup of coffee and headed out back with my dogs. I was greeted this morning by all of my daylilies in full bloom, my blue butterfly bush blooming like crazy and my double knockout roses showing off their glory. There is no better way to start your day than to walk through your garden.

You mentioned dreaming of a pond, that is what I did for many years. Several times I had people give me an appraisal but it was always enough to go out and buy a car. So about five years ago I told myself this is not brain surgery and pick up a shovel and started digging. It took a little while but go it done. You can then buy the liners and pump and filter box for a few hundred dollars. I think I did as well as any contractor and it was just mostly exercise.

Thank you, it has been a long process. Grew up in Georgia so learning to garden in Texas has been like gardening on the moon but if I can just live to 100 I might get it right.

Hi Angela,
You live very near me. I am just down the road in Nassau Bay, near NASA. Your flowers are beautiful. The recent rain, Sun and Fri nite, ruined a lot of my beautiful flowers. They just baked in the sun the next day, after nearly drowning during the heavy rains. My back yard was flooded. Will start over on some other more heat tolerant plants. Yu spend a lot more time in the garden than i do. I am also a triathlete so I spend a lot of time training. But i love my garden and agree, there is no better way to start the day than looking at my beautiful garden.

OMG! That is terrible. I hate mother nature sometimes, so devistating. Was everyone okay, even the furry friends if any. That is a lot of perennials you planted. I hope it turns out the way you want. I could never afford all those perennials, so I seperate the ones I have each year. I do buy quite a bit though.
