we just got chickens and are now enjoying the eggs... i bet you get wonderful eggs from these lovelies! Is it hard to keep ducks? is there a coop for them.. like chickens? Do you have a pond nearby for them or what?

Waterfowl in the Garden

Waterfowl can add a multiple use benefit to any garden as they eat harmful slugs, snails, & insects...as well as provide entertainment with their antics to their human gardening host. Let alone become a beautiful addition in a pond.See More

Roses & Hanging Baskets

ROSES & HANGING BASKETS

A teenage granddaughter

comes downstairs for her date

with this see-through blouse on and no bra.

Her grandmother just pitched a fit,

telling her not to dare go out like that!

The teenager tells her!

'Loosen up Grams.

These are modern times.

You gotta let your rose buds show!'

and out she goes.

The next day the teenager comes down stairs,

and the grandmother is sitting there with no… Continue

When it takes that much carbon usage to collect the recycled items, is it really good for the earth?

Posted on June 27, 2010 at 9:30am 1 Comment

Growing up on a ranch & farm, we always recycled. But never put a tub or container out on a curb for some air polluting diesel truck to come by & pick up. When it takes that much carbon usage to collect the recycled items, is it really good for the earth? Or is it just good for the conscience of those wanting to have the illusion that they are making a difference?

I grew up with recycling taking on a more personal endeavor. One that meant the entire family had to use their… Continue

Spring Clean-up in Brookings ... a long tradition of recycling

Posted on April 26, 2010 at 12:40pm 0 Comments

Well, spring clean up in Brookings, South Dakota is coming to an end. The residents have, as is annually done, put their "throw away" items on the curb & the rest of the community has first dibs on the things before the city unleashes the garbage trucks, dump trucks & front end loaders to hall away that which is left.

Its a great way for frugal types to acquire everything from furniture & household items, to fencing & lumber!

This year was my first BIG event… Continue

Pebbles & children

Posted on January 5, 2010 at 3:30am 2 Comments

There is something about pebbles that draw kids of all ages. With this idea in mind, I have decided that one element I want to put in my garden this coming summer is a pebble mosaic. Something whimsical that would draw a child in... regardless of their age. Perhaps something that includes dribbling water and other fun elements.

It was all inspired by my granddaughter, Tando this past summer, as she discovered rocks, and gravel & water & green things. Watching her discover the… Continue

Thanks for all of the tips on using/not using cedar for critter houses. I am not aware of any Warnke's in your area, just MN, WI, and CA. I am getting an area ready to make some more blue bird houses. I am so excited that Mr. Bluebird has chosen one of our houses already. We put up our Purple Martin house and the sparrows have already taken residence. Haven't decided if we want to try and keep them evicted or not.
