Great ideasl, Lyn and Patrick. I plant my garlic down about 4 inches and 4-6 inches apart (farther is better if water is not well supplied). I mulch with wheat straw, though any mulch will do to keep down weed competition and keep in…
Muriel, I agree with Manny, though I live in SE VA zone 8 and my garlic is usually bulbed up by June30/first week of July. Now you will have delightful tasting garlic "spring onions" equivalent. Many chefs love to use this…
Lila, lovely vegetables and fruit. Charlie and Bob absolutely great ideas for waist hight planters. Also a great post on organic critter control. The posts have been very informative this winter/spring. I am so happy to see all the excitement as…
@Paula, Have you tried oven-roasted brussels sprouts? There is a nice recipe in the NYTs for maple syrup glazed brussels sprouts, though even with just olive oil and sea salt they are great roasted. It really brings out their sweetness.
Alan, try seedsaversexchange.com. Members and the parent organization offer orange pepper seeds. For plants, I suspect chiliplants.com would have them. They have an excellent array of peppers, eggplants and tomatoes.
Someone asked about preventing snail damage. i believe that diatomaceous earth which controls slugs should also work. You should use a mask so as not to inhale it, the particles are small and the dust is not healthy to breath for that reason. It is…
Angie, Every year I forget that if I leave the tomatoes to ripen on the vine, the animals take one or two bites and leave the remains. I now bring them in as they just begin to color, they still taste great, but I don't lose so much fruit to…
Additionally, if one fertilizes too much with high nitrogen fertilizer, there are lots of leaves but few blossoms and fruits on plants. But with this heat, it may affect some varieties that are not well adapted to set fruit in the heat. they often…
Great looking veggies, everyone! Went away for vacation, came back and all the beans were stringy and tough... So we're having shell bean and corn salsa!!! Fortunately all the varieties have good flavor as shell beans, too. Will have to plant…
Hey Barbara, I wish I could remember the name of a magazine I was just looking though at the store. It had a great article about how to work to change the ordinance regarding backyard chickens. The big thing seems to be finding other people that share your interests and going to city council meetings. Know your information so that you can educate others. There are a lot of misguided concerns with chickens such as smell, disease, and noise level. Also know your city ordinances. In the article they pointed out the pot belly pigs were allowed, so why not chickens? Also, if you are in the city make sure to clarify you would like permission to have hens. Roosters are to loud, and break most city noise ordinances.
Thanks for your response! Our garden is two years old so we had tomatoes in the same spot for two years. I moved the tomatoes where onions and lettuce had been, peppers where the tomatoes had been. That's a good point that they are in the same family!
I use a drip (leaky hose presently) and only have the timers water 3x's a week for 15 minutes---and flowers (annuals and perennials grow like weeds). Marti from the ESV
Barbara,
I am so excited to read your email with the offer to expand my garden. If it's not too much trouble can you send me 3 of each variety mentioned? My address is 1103 Tom Ln, Marietta, GA 30066. Again, thank you very much.
