"Hi Barbara, I received a comment from you, but I don't think that it was meant for me. However, it is good to hear from you anyway. I'm enjoying Spring in Virginia, just as you are, I'm sure! I don't think that there is any…"
"Mary Ellen adn Howard: great ideas. I have done this a few times by lining my compost pile with straw bales to keep it contained as I build up, and by the next year I have been able to plant in it. My current compost pile is inadequately decomposed,…"
"I have done this before and gotten a small to modest crop of potatoes and green beans. I did use composted manure, however, and made a "pocket" of soil to plant plants or seeds in. If you find that your seeds don't do well, I agree…"
"Italian pasta pesto for Christmas Eve: one cup parsley, 1-2 cloves garlic, chopped, 1/3 cup toasted walnuts 1/4-1/3 cup olive oil. chop ing small food processor or mash in mortar. Serve with parmesan over fresh pasta."
"Potatoes Daphne (with an herbal twist): Peel about 2lbs potatoes and slice thinly, place in a casserole sprayed with nonstick spray. sprinkle on salt and ground nutmeg sparingly as you layer and add in sprigs of thyme and sparing amounts of rosemary…"
"Try culantro which is available at Johhny's seeds in Albion, ME. Right now they are out of stock. It is a warm season taste-alike herb that is used in place of cilantro during the hot season in Central America."
Hi Barbara, I received a comment from you, but I don't think that it was meant for me. However, it is good to hear from you anyway. I'm enjoying Spring in Virginia, just as you are, I'm sure! I don't think that there is any prettier place to be than Virginia in the Spring! Have a good day! Carolyn
I planted a new flower bed last April that was suppose to be deer proof. Guess they didn't read the same magazine I did! I only have a fence around the pool ~ so the rest of the yard is like a buffet for them. I'm hoping that one day I'll have enough plants that it won't hurt for them to nibble a little but right now their visits are detrimental.
I just have a fence around the pool and the only thing I can plant inside the fence is a few herbs, one squash plant and one tomato plant. The deer have been rough on my other tomato plants this year. They eat the tops out along with the blooms so I'm counting my days of fresh tomatoes.
Barbara - the Ginger arrived today! Thank you so much! I couldn't resist opening it here at the office - and am pleased to say that it is in great shape. I was a little concerned since it stayed with UPS over the weekend, but it look wonderful. Can't wait to get it in the ground tonight! :-)
Barbara - I can't thank you enough! Hopefully it will get here today so I can get it in the ground this weekend! What are the temperatures like where you are right now? If it is a bit cooler there than it is here, I might put it in a pot for a couple of weeks, moving it in during the heat of the day and putting it out in the mornings/afternoons, then put it in the ground in a couple of weeks after it has gotten acclimated. Don't want to shock it... What do you think?
Hi Barbara, I've been working in the yard today in this dreadful heat. But I had to let you know I have an eggplant in my driveway garden! It's only about 5 inches but I feel like a proud parent! The tomatoes look like they will eventually do something but the eggplant got right to work!
Thanks Barbara! :-) I am going to pick some up at the grocery store just to give it a try that way - although I read that most grocery store ginger has been killed by bleaching/boiling following harvest. Never hurts to try, though, right?
When we purchase this house 7 years ago...the yard was with only trees and lots of them...we had to cut some down to get some sun and we still have to trim more of them...I have spent lots of time planting and every chance I have I take a clipping…See More
