Halifax and Seattle

Posted on July 10, 2009 at 7:15am 0 Comments

I am off to Halifax for a meeting tomorrow, and Seattle right after that. I think I may find a morning or afternoon at each place to wander around and I am hoping to find a garden to visit, as both places seem to me to be good ones for finding a garden. I will take my camera, which helps me look at things with a different perspective than if I just look without snapping photos. Plus I can share them with my family later.

Does anyone have information about gardens to visit in either… Continue

Heading home

Posted on June 29, 2009 at 5:03am 3 Comments

I have been in beautiful upstate New York for a full week. As much as I love this area where I grew up, I am very excited to be heading back to Michigan today. I miss my garden. I worry about my garden. I wonder what I missed while I was away. Is this common? I was up at the Sagamore Resort on Lake George at a meeting for several days. I had forgotten how truly beautiful that lake is. And the homes and businesses all around Bolton Landing had many beautiful gardens. Lots of hostas and ferns, my… Continue

You have a beautiful yard and gardens. Enjoyed the slideshow.  Landscaping with hostas is a wonderful idea. I think your zone is a  bit cooler than the St. Louis zone. It was so hot this summer here that my hostas were dying back before fall.

deer repellant: 1 gallon of water, 2 Tbsp. liquid soap..any, 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil, 2 cups of milk, 2 beaten eggs, 2 cups of any louisisana hot sauce ( I use Frank's)
The egg and milk i combie then strain it through a seive to prevent clogging my sprayer.
I learned this the hard way! Good luck, Mike

Your comments are right on! After viewing your garden pics, our gardens are very similar, curved borders, lots of shade loving hostas and ferns, splashes of color with lilies and astilbe, use of planters and some stone. It's my quiet retreat and I love it. I used to garden in the sun and now that I have shade gardens, I wouldn't trade them for the world. I love being in the cover of the trees, with the dapples of sunlight coming through.

You do a beautiful job! If you are ever in Grand Rapids you are welcome to stop by.

It's funny, I saw the small picture in the group of gardeners pictures and thought "my brother would love to see this, it is almost like the plants he has" I then went to your page and what do you know, you live in Ann Arbor. My brother lives in Ann Arbor. The two of you must shop in the same garden store.

Yucka

"Joan, I researched this for ya. Yucca like to be planted in sandy or rocky soil and like full sun. Do not over or under water them. Yucca are very hardy and pretty well take care of themselves. Just cut of the dead leaves in the Spring...…"
