Bush Beans and a wonderful day!

First of all I planted some bush beans and I dont know what they are or what can I expect. Will they climb a trellis?any experience will be appreciated....second, i played hookie today from work and had a marvelous morning in the back garden where I moved things around, trimmed some things and rebuilt a retaining wall that fell over during the winter..Ahhhhhhhhhhhh...my legs and butt are sore but it sure looks nice!!!bety in michiganSee More

"Yep, bush beans are just upright plants, about the size of bell pepper plants. That's what I plant, so I don't have to worry about trellising. Can't think of a better reason to stay home from work... ;)"

Bush Beans and playing Hookie

Hi Everyone..I have a question. What are bush beans....i planeted some but have no idea what to expect..will they grow on a trellis...or are they really just "bushes"I played hookie from work today to work in my back garden. What fun it was to clean up a flower bed, prune some bushes, plant some forget-me-nots and rebuild a retaining wall that fell over this last winter....my legs and butt are so sore and I took a 4 hour nap this afternoon but it was all worth it....betty in jacksonSee More

How much time do you spend a week on average in your garden when weather permits?
8 hours
I bought this little house surrounded by overgrown gardens. There is not a blade of grass on the property. Althought all I have are these 4 "Before" pictures you can get an idea of how much in disarray the garden was!! I shreaked when the realitor showed me the house because it was the GARDENS that sold me. She couldn't see it...all she saw was WEEDS...and weeds there were! 15 ft. Nettles! It was a mess but I had fun, fun, fun taking my time and "going in there".

The woman who put the gardens in origionally worked at a nursery so what ever varieties I have I have at lease two...and sometimes three or four (like the lilys and lilacs)....Oh what a treat.....

I will write more later....how I cleaned up the gardens...the wonderful discoveries and what has happened in the three years I have been here....

Bush beans won't take over but if you ever decide to grow bird house gourds make sure you have plenty of space!

Hi - We only live about 1 1/2 miles from the Ren Fest - our kids worked there every summer when they were in high school - if you go again, give me a call and come visit!

I never had good luck with starting seeds before this year when I used the little peat pellets. In past years I'd have all kinds of problems with damping off and plants not germinating. This year I covered the trays of peat pots with plastic wrap (lightly - not wrapped tight) and had excellent success! I had some pots that nothing sprouted in, so I just put more seeds in them and tried again - now I have tons of stuff - onions, Brandywine tomatoes, beets, carrots, dill - you name it! I've been saving seeds from the tomatoes, marigold, zinnias, dill, and others and they grow great - just have to be sure to purchase 'open polinated' seeds - these will produce viable seeds - many hybrids and GM's won't.

The bush beans can pretty much stay on their own. The pole beans are the ones that need to be trellised. When they start growing you'll know what to do!!

Welcome Betty--
My friend and I bought some property on Skiff Lake in Jackson County, Liberty Twp. We are about 5-6 miles South of the city. Unfortunately, the real estate market has stopped us from building our retirements homes, but we will get there eventually. I would love to see what you've done to place--can't wait for you to get pictures of your current garden...Sounds like you had a challenge, and it also sounds like you were up to the challenge...
