The Bittersweet is still with us

I did some weeding today in the garden area I am trying to create where the bittersweet once thrived. Lo and behold...the bittersweet is still with us. I found and destroyed several new shoots of the vine attempting to choke out the perrenials I have planted there. We had quite a downpour of heavy rain right after I weeded, so my plants are now getting air and water. Tomorrow, they should also get some sunshine and that will help, too.

JULY 28, 2009

Well, the summer weather we were waiting for has finally arrived. It is very "soupy" out. I am not a fan of this hot and humid weather and I tend to stay indoors in the airconditioned comfort during this weather. They have been predicting thunder storms for 3 days, but we have not gotten them. I had to water my plants last night and I was hoping for a little rain today, but none so far...

Fairy Garden Description

Posted on July 26, 2009 at 2:27pm 1 Comment

Many people have commented on my visit to my friend's fairy garden. As I said my pictures do not really show the detail, so I'll try to describe it. It is a large oval galvanized tub that is planted with lots of miniature plants including hostas. The tub is just about the right height for the kids to view and interact with the garden. Vignettes and statues of fairies are stading among the plants. One example is the patio with table and chairs in my pictures. My friend was telling me that at one… Continue

I had a delightful day at my friend Mary-Anne's house today. She cooked a wonderful feast of hummus, red and yellow peppers stuffed with eggplant, garden salad, roasted peppers, rice pilaf with grilled chicken and a raspberry tart. It was so colorful, healthy and delicious. We sat at her farmhouse table in her kitchen and chatted while she cooked for us.In between the raindrops we were able to see parts of her garden including the fairy garden she planted for her grandchildren. She and Luigi… Continue

Great idea. Perhaps a suggestion to keep dad busy. I bet they would work really well in back of my house. Lot's of sun from morning through late afternoon. Soil back there isn't great but this would eliminate that issue.
Thanks.

ah ha! thanks for the link! ooh, i'll have to see about sending them internationally, too.... maybe that's why i thought we weren't able to send then through the mail. then again, my grandfather brought Angel's Trumpet seeds back from Slovenia for my mom one time years ago... they're now giant, beautiful, fragrant plants (that my dad has to lug in and out of my parents' jacuzzi room every fall and spring, lol) but it's worth it!!!!!

thanks again! like i said, if you want to exchange, i've got plenty, and i'll have more come fall!!!!!

Hi Carolyn :D I see you're in zone 6 hmm? I'm in zone 5 (Warren, MI). My sister-in-law and I have become 'flower buddies' and LOVE this site!!! I thought, since our 'zones' are fairly similar, we could share war stories, advice, and pictures. I gather the seeds off of my plants... I'd say 'every year', but I've only been gardening for one, so that would be a lie, lol. However, I plan to grab the little suckers off of each and every plant I can as soon as I notice them. If you're interested in starting from seed, perhaps we could exchange... as long as it's not illegal to send them via USPS?

I think your landscape is lovely! My fiancee just rolls his eyes each time he looks at 'his' lawn and sees that I've dug more of it up for my flowers. Eh, his 'lawn' consists of mostly weeds, anyway!!!! I think I'm doing him a favor!!!!

Oh, well... you looked like a nice person, so I thought i'd send you a friend request. happy gardening! hope to 'talk' to you soon!!!!

I qualified and was active in Utah in the 80s ... also took the courses here in NC but there is not the need to volunteer here and I am so busy feeding mosquitoes that the garden is neglected.

Just sitting here watching my little humming bird but everytime I go to snap a pic off she flies. I have the feeder right outside my computer room window. All my flowers are blooming great but wish we would have some sun. Just going to be another rainy summer again I guess.
