Peppers and Potatoes

I have lots of veggies growing in the garden, but my favorites are the potatoes and peppers - which were experiments. The potatoes are growing in a stack of tires. Not a pretty sight, but they are in the backyard getting plenty of sun. And lots of rain! The peppers are doing well also. They are growing in 2-liter soda bottles hanging off the back porch. Also, not very pretty, but they are also in the back and getting plenty of sun. They don't get as much rain - and I have to water them through…See More

What kind of gardening do you like to do?
Anything except pulling weeds. I have moved into a house with a yard full of flowers, bushes, & trees and am trying to learn everything about my new garden - including the names of these plants.
How much time do you spend a week on average in your garden when weather permits?
Not as much as I want - maybe just 10-12 hours per week.

Vegetable Gardens (end of month update)

Posted on May 31, 2009 at 10:49am 1 Comment

I thought I would photograph all my vegetable plants today and see how they're doing.

Tomatoes - 6 plants

Cherry tomatoes - 6 plants

Cucumbers - 5 plants (three in raised bed, two in "flower" garden out back - testing to see what works best)

Carrots - three rows in raised bed

Radishes - three rows in raised bed

Strawberries - 1 plant, already harvested FOUR berries (first year)

Russet Potatoes - 2 potatoes planted in a tire stack (on 3rd tire… Continue

Potato stack is growing

The potatoes grew a lot this week - well over the top of the second tire in the stack. Today, I added the third tire, and filled the tire with additional soil. These potatoes are taking off. This is the first time I have ever planted potatoes this way, so I'm not sure how successful I will be. I was a bit disappointed when I was adding the dirt. I broke off two leaves! How sad!

Here's the history on my potato garden this year -

April 26 - sowed eight potatoes in two… Continue
