A friend of mine told me that mason makes a good book on canning. I was going to do some canning myself, and have never done it before. I plan to look it up, and buy it. Good luck!

Married....Finally!

Good afternoon, to all of my friends in the garden! I have been absent from the site for far too long and I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out and let you all know that I am anxious to reconnect. My sweetheart and I were finally married on June 6th, beneath the most beautiful, majestic oak tree, which happens to live in our front yard! In the month or so before the wedding, we were busily readying the yard to reflect the beauty of the occasion. I can't begin to tell you how many…See More

Update on Zuri since her snake bite

Posted on May 12, 2009 at 9:50am 3 Comments

Well, first let me express how grateful I am to all of you who have expressed your prayers and well wishes for my "puppy love." I am so touched! I know that you will all be happy to hear that Zuri is doing great! On Sunday (Mother's Day), exactly one week after her snake incident, Zuri was back in full form. While we were working on the yard, still planting flowers for our upcoming wedding, we noticed her staring intently at the ground. She was so funny, the way she would lift one foot and ever… Continue

A cautionary tale for my fellow gardeners and animal lovers

Posted on May 4, 2009 at 12:03pm 10 Comments

Good morning, all! I know that many of you, like me, have faithful, furry companions who help you in tending your gardens. Now, as the temperatures rise, and we arm ourselves with spades, rakes, shovels, we also don protective gear: gloves, hats, sunscreen, etc. Please be aware that lurking in that bramble that threatens to encroach, that the snakes are very active this time of year. Whether you see them or… Continue

And so the garden grows...

Posted on April 25, 2009 at 1:32pm 1 Comment

Well, we just got back from town, where we visited 3 different garden centers! I swear I was just going to pick up a few things and yet, somehow, we came back with a truck bed full! I really don't know what came over us...and don't have any idea what all we got. All I know for certain is that it is time to get planting! We are adding to the veggie garden, as well as working on two flower beds. I'll be posting before and after pictures as soon as I can. Hope you all are enjoying a beautiful day… Continue

well it has been a while since I last visited the site. Sorry. things have been a bit topsy turvy here, not to mention that we snuck a quick vacation in there too. I am so excited that we had some warm, dry weather here in Illinois after the awful rains that lead to floods and the loss of two people just a few miles from us. I have tomatoes, patty pan squash, pumpkins, green beans, cukes and all sorts of things coming up. hurray! It is on it's way, even though it was only 65 today. This weekend is to be better.

the only thing that came up from seed was the cilantro and it is doing fantastic. i bought one lavendar, a basil and some German thyme starters, will try them this year before i invest more time and money in herbs.

I am also grateful for digital! Take a thousand pictures and just keep the incidental best. Experiment and even edit.

Hi Contessa! Thank you for your nice post! Enjoyed it so much. Sorry for delay in getting back to you; I am totally new to this site and forgot to check it for days. I love your pics. I am humbled to see your huge garden! We have a little 8' x 8' raised bed only, but it's more than enough for us. We will probably 1 or 2 more - one for herbs, and another for garlic/onions/peppers. Our existing one is all tomatoes (well, I did sneak one basil plant in...) Look forward to hearing more about your garden and what's up in witness pro. land! ;-) All the best, Kris
