"Good thought on the rain barrels! Will check that out. I am done planting for now too - until later in the fall when I will add mums to my garden and then, in the winter when I will plant more bulbs!"

Summer Rains

Crystalline drops of liquid sustenance fall on my beloved, Enchanted Garden nearly everyday now – the rainy season upon us, bright

daisy-heads bend with grace as the soft breeze shakes dampness from

their pearly petals. Hanging baskets of red and blue callibrachoa with

white nemesia sway weightily as moisture drops…

Damp Soil - Sunny Disposition

Turning the dark, damp soil between two Society Garlics I carefully pushed the Day Lily into the hole, straightening the roots and positioning the plant perpendicularly. Given to me at Mother’s Day by my son, the lily has multiple buds and blooms – seeming to stretch and

reach for the sun which is hiding behind ominous rain clouds.…

Southern Ring Neck

Posted on August 11, 2009 at 6:04pm 1 Comment

Standing up from my chair in the den, I reached down to pick up what I thought was a piece of yarn from the floor. As I reached for the scrap, it moved – a tiny, Southern Ring Neck Snake! Harmless, I gently picked the little fellow up in my hand as I carefully examined it. No bigger than a piece of a shoelace, it coiled up meekly in my palm. These snakes are frequent visitors on our lanai – sometimes ending up as “offerings” from my kitties at my… Continue

Showers of Blessings

Stepping out to remove the seed pans and feeders from my enchanted garden, the air is warm and still. Plucking a nuthatch from a clay pot of Plumbago, I gaze across the beds as the sun falls below the garden wall. A golden haze seems to gild the herbs. Several days without rain has drained my beloved flowers from much–needed moisture, thankfully this is our appointed day to water. Placing the feeders on the lanai counter, I wait as… Continue

Warm Day - Lovely End

Posted on August 4, 2009 at 11:00am 0 Comments

Tossing the last weed in the bucket, my eyes moved across the garden at ground level. The smell of Rosemary clung to my garden shears as I admired the freshly manicured herb bed. Sprigs of Parsley and Basil lay on the rail next to the bed chosen for seasoning the chicken and potatoes awaiting this evening’s dinner. Now standing, I pulled the garden gloves from my hands and looked heavenward, several large, cool drops of water falling on my forearm.… Continue

I've thought about rain barrels too - maybe Home Depot will lower the price now that the rains have come. Rain is so crazy down here! I do love storms, am expecting some bad ones this year and don't want to plant anything now that might get yanked out of the ground by wind & rain.

Thank you, too! It's funny that they encourage us to use micro irrigation when they use that much water! I am watering pots twice a day unless it rains. I just checked my water bill and I used 3000 gal household water and 7000 gal. reclaimed water last month. Will have to check it every month.

I'm surprised how much water it takes, I would like to attach it to my reclaimed water if possible. My son in AZ has a mist system that he is changing to the drip because he thinks too much evaporates. I'd love to fly him here to FL to do the whole system for me :) but they're expecting their 2nd son next month and the timing isn't very good.

Your enchanted garden is wonderful! I've been thinking about a misting system for my pots, how long have you had yours and did you do it yourself? We got 2.5" of rain from last night's storm, we had been very dry - these FL storms can be very picky about who they'll visit!

Thank you for the note. It has rained for the most part over a three day period. Unusual for Colorado. I was at the garden center and it sounds like the sun is back just in time for me to have some days off.. time to spend in the yard. Hope you have a wonderful week. Blessings, Kristi
