All About Poo

I'm re-visiting the amazing aspects of manure.  Gene Logsdon's book "Holy Shit" (pardon my language) is a great resource for anyone wanting to grow their expertise!  I'd love to know your use and experiences and what you are learning regarding...poo.See More

I'll put in peas in late February out in the open garden, I do have Broad beans planted as a green manure cover crop in one area of the garden to bump up the nitrogen when I till them under in the Spring. I'll leave some growing to harvest. For next Fall we plan on some low tunnels to keep a few hardier and cool temp. plants going all winter. This year our focus has been a deer fence, they wreck havoc on the garden. I've had as many as six in the yard at a time. I don't mind watching them out on the fields but I hate them in the garden. My herd dog doesn't even chase them anymore, I guess he's decided they are just some fancy goats that we're raising.

We have to dig the Dahlias because as soon as the rains start here it's like living in a tidal flat with standing water. The ground becomes so saturated that the tender Dahlia tubers just rot in the ground.

My mother-in-law never dug up the dahlia tubers and they grew profusely for years!

I have a polytunnel and am looking forward to many more weeks of working inside but outside. I have leeks, celery, winter cabbage, snowball turnips, broad beans and lettuces still to care for . I sowed peas a few weeks ago and they are peeking above the compost in their trays already. I have another tunnel where I will be putting all my seeds for next spring.

Hy Darlene, thanks :)

Have not a clue about latitude, but I am probably in something similar to zone4/5 if that is any help.

Mild summers and cold winters recently!

Tunnels will raise the outside temp to about 8/10 degrees higher!

Hope this helps, ask more if you want :)

Hello fellow Oregonian and MG'er!

I love your Dahlia pics (and all the others too!) and especially your English roses! I grow lots of roses, most all I've started myself and are own root.

My main rose focus the past few years has been OGR and this year I'm enamored with the Austins... I'll be placing my Austin order in the next few weeks (for abt 18+) and would love to hear of your experiences with them :)

I LIVED IN VIRGINIA , EVEN THOUGH IS NOT A HARD FREEZE STATE IT GETS COLD ENOUGH TO KILL THE TRUMPETS WHAT I DID WAS TO CUT BACK TO ABOUT 3 INCHES FROM THE GROUND. COVER THEM WITH PLASTIC AND THEN POUR SOIL AROUND THE PLANT UP TO THE TOP AFTER THAT JUST COVRE THE AREA WITH MULCH. THEY WILL GO INTO A DORMANT STAGE . OK WAIT TILL THE BEGINNING OF SPRING AND JUST REMOVE THE MULCH AND THE SOIL THAT YOU APPLY FEED THEM WITH MIRACLE GROW. BELIEVE ME THEY BI NICE AND BIG AND THEY WILL BLOOM THREE TIMES
