Adding a stream to aerate the pond

Update: 7-12-09 This is a "small" part of the preparation of the stream, which is unable to be seen in this picture. The various ground covers need to be relocated and other plants and rocks need to be brought in.
The view from the pond looking back up (above) is a bit overwhelming.

This is a new project to create a stream from the pond below that naturally fills from water run-off during rain and snow. This wooded area has rich black soil with at least 5 types of ground cover that we have identified. We are taking cues from streams and falls located in the upper peninsula of Michigan.

The Red Jade Iris Project

Posted on July 3, 2009 at 7:30pm 6 Comments

Update:7-10-09 All of the rhizomes arrived in good condition at their new homes. They have gone to Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama. Now comes the wait

This spring many of you were fascinated (as was I) with our Red Jade iris. Perhaps it was the extended cool weather, but these merlot-like iris leaned a little toward red this spring. Through email and wall posts we exchanged quite a dialogue so, I decided to send several rhizomes around the country to see if they bloom… Continue

Cleanup After the Rain

Posted on June 21, 2009 at 11:44am 2 Comments

Haven't had a down pour in Michigan with this much rain in quite awhile. Depending on the location it was anywhere from 3-5 inches in a very short period. Gutters couldn't handle the volume which created quite a bit of run off damage near the house but no basement water. Others weren't so lucky. Elevation and sandy soil helped. Baptsia got pounded and need staking. Lightning was significant but released a good amount of nitrogen.

It appears as though all of the ruckus woke up the… Continue

Breaking All the Rules

Posted on June 13, 2009 at 5:40pm 1 Comment

In the short time I've been on this site, the learning curve has been dramatic. You certainly can't get all of this from a book, which is a great asset of the internet. The day remained overcast and temperatures were moderate and soil remained moist. Another great day to move plants. I'm sure you've all set things in place and the next season you ask yourself, "What was I thinking? Here's where I start breaking the rules. Transplant in Fall what blooms in Spring and vice versa. Nope, not… Continue

I'm so looking forward to your pond stream Dean. I've not gotten to that extent in my own garden yet I'm edging that way each and every day. Thank you for the inspiration.

Dean, the only rhizomes I planted were bamboo, like an idiot, a long time ago mind you, and now they have of course taken over the front and back yard.

You have natural rich black soil!...I am moving there, we have natural orange clay and then found out when we did a road trip to local pottery community that my house also has a vein of the pottery gray clay just below it, just like dog poo! You have a lovely lot with beautiful plantings, congratulations. Love the turtle, yes and the cat, I have at least 11. Bless your heart, I don't get enough time in the yard either even though I am always out there, I think it's called OCD!

Dean, I would love to tell you the project is done but, IT IS NOT. It has been to hot, no rain, the ground is like a rock with cracks, so I choose not to start it yet. Instead I am finishing another project behind my privacy fence. I put some pavers down and got pond rock to cover the area that is to small to mow and I am tired of fighting the weeds. It is a 3 ft area between my white fence and a chainlink fence. I have a french lilac and a climbing rose growing there. I also had to replace all my solar lights so trying to keep some of the old one for the back yard and all the new in the front yard. I have to check everyone with new batteries and go from there. I had a major problem with the indoor fish tank also. Bought some new Mollies and they were all sick and contaminated all my other fish. Major clean up with that and replacement of the dead fish. Our Petco had a complete shut down of the fish department. They got a bad shipment and have many more to replace. I just got my money back and am now getting some new ones elsewhere. There is always another project just around the corner...as you well know. Hope your projects are all going well. As for your rule...I plant when I can and buy on sale when I can. I just got 7 plants last week for $1.00 each instead of $12.99, quite a savings...all perenials. Have to get them in the ground this week. Have them in the shade and protected from the hot sun and heat. Busy Busy...
