"This is so beautiful, I love the dark green and deep purple together. The grass too, it's all gorgeous. Did you say those are violas ? I got some this year but mine are a lighter purple, just planted them for a ground cover. I like yours better."

"Willis-it is the gardening and other things that seem to have a natural flow with nature and life that heals me. Of course, the family and friends are the ones that keep me in a place that I can enjoy these things."

Our Home

Our home was built in the 1950's and in twelve years we have expanded the 3 bedroom 1 & 1/2 house into a completely different abode. It is now a 2,200 sq ft, 6 bedroom, 2 full bath & sunroom dream home. The lot is big and we still had plenty of room to landscape our favorite leisure activities into the backyard. We have an above ground pool (12 ft wide/24 ft long/ & a six foot deep end) with a semi-wrap-around deck, a firepit area that easily sits eight to ten people and a watergarden.
Neither my partner or myself had much knowledge of plants-so, it was live and learn. Our plant selection is eclectic. Trees were the first priority for us: In the backyard we planted two Lillac trees; two Dragonheart (habiscus family) trees; and two hybrid palms that did surprisingly well until a late hail storm last winter. We have nearly a dozen perennial bushes & shrubs that provide us with color for the three seasons and serve as natural borders to hide the shed & compost area. We incorporated river rock around our perennial plants so that the eye is drawn to the far end of the yard to the watergarden. Annuals are bought for flower pots, hanging baskets and window boxes. With a Kentucky bluegrass lawn (served us well for six kids, their friends, and daycare kids to use the yard w/o damaging it) the backyard is still big enough for a game of crochet, lawn darts or two dozen kids room to sunbathe.
Our rose garden is on the west side of the house with the dalhias. The front yard is more simple with deep red azeala bushes lining the walk, a Japaneese maple near the entrance and several calla lillies & hostas topped off with a Dogwood tree on the west corner near the roses. With dozens & dozens of plants-our yard is child friendly and when the toddlers pick me a handful of my own plants-I smile and line up the vases on the counter. Afterall, flowers are meant to be enjoyed for many reasons-the best reason is the one given with love & a hug.

Marg-this will not surprised you, wanted to join the herb garden group since I am trying one (starts) in my window sill and will need help...didn't know how to join. But, then again, it took me two hours to figure out the photo loader. I was going to e-mail you and ask for help, but have done that so much (and in so many ways) I didn't want it drastically clear what a 'problem-child" I am. Thanks for direction to this site: love it, love it, love it. I could sit in the photo shop for hours and I spend several minutes on some pics. I am in awe of such beauty. I'll never have to buy another gardening magazine again. Then, people are so friendly and helpful. Again, thanks-this is a cool site.

That waterfall is Upper Caney Creek Falls in Bankhead Nat'l Forest in Alabama. Close to my home, where I do a lot of Volunteer work thru out the yr. I'll be posting much more photo's coming soon. Check out the wild Spider Lily in my photos, I stumbled upon a large group of them last summer while working on a non-native plant survey in one of the hundreds of deep canyons in Bankhead.

You welcome-well deserved praise. The critters are our youngest of twins and friends-give them a camera and they will amaze you. We have six children, but with the friends they brought home (and stayed) our children number over thirty and they keep coming back and coming back (and coming back) and we would not have it any other way. Our garden is child friendly...did daycare 5 children under five 50 hours a week and they could be little botanist at times-as long as it wasn't dramatic pruning :) we' put their treasures in cups to give to their parents-homes should be loved and lived in is our motto-(You bet organic-earth first)

That is my dream camera-right now I have a nikon and believe it or not a Kodak that takes better pics than the Nikon. Had Canon's all my life-should have known the EOS is the camera I want-good for you. Looks like we will both be saving our pennies for dream equipment-but n the meantime, your camera makes mine look like a throw away :) (I won'thave sour grapes; I won't have sour grapes)

Thank you so much-I love gardening. You're right tho about trying to build a water garden with a bad back...you don't want to hurt yourself. I love indoor pot planting as well. I find it a great way to test my abilities with particular plant before transferring to the backyard. The important thing is to grow life. Indoor garden can be equally rewarding and if you want color outside, carry them out with you :) Much easier for your back-good luck-hope your day is filled with color
