You may be right Nancy, I don't have rodents (have a resident feral cat) so it's not a problem here.

I don't understand the screen either, seems expensive and not necessary. I put shredded paper down and cover with shredded leaves, compost or bark depending on what garden it is. I have a source of shredded paper where I can get 30 gal bags…

Just looked at the new 2012 USDA Hardiness map and I have gone up again from zone 6/7 to a new 8b. I don't usually garden by a zone map but I find it interesting that the USDA keeps changing things. I am anxious to get started with spring but…

Well the signs of spring are here, I went to the first garden show in the Willamette valley of Oregon and it is one of my favorite. The Good Earth Show. I found a Peony I have been looking for, a bush type called Memorial Day, a double bright true red, it's an American heirloom variety grown in pioneer days and often used to decorate Civil War graves. I also found a disturbing practice where some bulb growers were selling (at a high price) tulip, daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs that… Continue

FALL CLEAN UP!!

Posted on October 17, 2009 at 11:49am 0 Comments

Well the leaves are falling so I have a question for all avid gardeners, do you clean up the beds in the fall or wait until spring? Perhaps like me you are selective in what you prune now and what you leave for winter interest. Do you remove dead vegetables and plant a cover crop or do you just leave it over winter and till it in in the spring? I have seen it done both ways so I don't think your garden cares much. I cut down most perennials in the fall, prune some shrubs, clean up all my… Continue

Fall begins on Tuesday

Posted on September 16, 2009 at 10:59am 0 Comments

I am already in full fall mode because if I wait I would never get everything done. I am at the trimming/pruning stage now and I actually enjoy the process. I usually prune all of my bushes by one third or more depending on what it is and when it blooms. My roses get dead headed unless they produce nice rose hips, then I leave them alone. Some perennials get cut down now, giving them a chance to produce a nice low carpet of green (shasta daisys etc), some are left until the first frost kills… Continue

End of Season?

Posted on August 19, 2009 at 4:39pm 2 Comments

Well today it's over 100 outside and no AC so what have I been doing all day, I've been canning !!! Pickled Beets, Pickled Red Cabbage and pickles. My house of course smells like vinegar and it's hot. I really have no choice on when to can and I no longer do very large batches, just enough for myself and to make up a few baskets for gifts. So far I have frozen or canned four different jams, beans, corn, basil, salsa, pasta sauce, and pie fillings. I have canned all my life and even though I am… Continue

Garden Photos

Posted on August 4, 2009 at 10:17am 0 Comments

Well today will be a busy one, I have a freelance photographer coming out this evening to take photos of my gardens. A friend called to ask me if this photographer could take some shots for an article she is writing on mid summer gardens. I try to always have color in my gardens and right now the glads, phlox, penstemon and echinacea are doing well and all of my hostas are in full bloom. The roses are almost ready to pop with their third big bloom so if she tries not to shot a few weeds it… Continue

Hi Diane, I am not a master gardener but I love growing things, my peach tree lives now for 6 yrs. in a washing machine bowl and does exeptionally well, i pruned today , so it is for my height and comfortable to harvest, the year before we had really big peaches, this year the rotten fruitfly really affected the fruit, so they came and sprayed also on a native tree right outside my bedroom window, it made me sick the smell, I dont spray at all, i fight nature with nature cause I am pick and eat, so sprays are a no no, with leafcurl, I noticed after I removed a lot of them , the rest dropped and new leafs came up, with absolutly no effect ,perfedt leafs, so why spray , I looked at all your photos and I do like what I saw , it seems a big property , what else do you grow?,I have a nice compost bin rectangular and some of the things is shared with the mice who moved in, I am not a scardy cat , it doesn,t matter to me, I get nice compost, just wish it wouldn,t take so long, I am thinking of growing walnut, and hazelnut and pecan, do you know any hints or tips for growing these, and do you have to have 2 of each like male/female?I also took note of the advice of growing wisteria , I honestly didnt realise it would be so much of a difference between the 2 different growing themes! thanks for that Miko

Congratulations on the tomato. We've had a few yellow cherry tomatoes that have been quite tasty but probably less than 10 total. I am happy to say that we have a lot of fruit growing on almost all the plants and flowers on all of them so I'm hoping we'll have a good crop in spite of the late start. I also have some very small fruit on my cucs so I'm crossing my fingers. My squash is still very small and not producing fruit yet so I don't have hope for much there. I noticed when we visited you the other day that you have a huge pumpkin coming along nicely. Good luck with the jungle!!
