Elizabeth, Judy made a really good point about air circulation.  Using a fan in the back porch or greenhouse can keep lots of issues from cropping up from insect infestations to fungal problems.  The fan helps to keep air moving, keeps the…

Thank you Freddie, Judy and Denise for your replies.  I've also been told a bleach solution could help if I douse my plants in it... Iv also tried something called "Eight" which is only a temporary fix.  I will be moving my…

Elizabeth, go get some Bayer Tree & Shrub at Lowe's or HD.  Mix in your watering can at a rate of 2 tablespoons per gallon of water and water it in to your plants.  It's a systemic that kills any sucking pests - mealies,…

The systemic really will work, also spraying with alcohol does a good job for the tops.  Using a fan will really help the plants from being overstressed too.  I've used alcohol and a fan in my greenhouse, and even liquid sevin seems…

Should be some horticultural soap or several insecticides, some people use a bayer product or a systemic you put in the soil, (Not a fertilizer this time of year).  The key is to treat your plants before you bring them in,  they go crazy…

HELP!! I've got Mealy Bugs!

Thumbnail
Hi everyone, well i'm VERY worried and upset.  I brought in all my succulents and put them on my back porch for the winter... I've noticed that many of my plants now have Mealy Bug.  I've tried spraying them with Peroxide and then I also went to the nursery and bought a spray called Eight.  It just keeps spreading to other plants! HELP!!!!

Time to take out the poster board and the pencils and draw up your garden plans while waiting for the snow to thaw!  Make up your wish list and maybe start hitting the stores for seeds.  Some stores already have their seeds out.  Hang…

Lowes is marking down their cactus and succulents 75%!

Just letting everyone know that if they have a Lowes hardware store, they are marking down the cactus & succulents 75% or at least they are in the mid California area.  Home Depot doesn't mark down their plants but rather, they return them for credit.  I bought hanging baskets filled with a variety of succulents for only $3.25 yesterday!!

Is the noose around your green thumb getting tighter waiting for the new growing season to begin?  Mine certainly is!   My shiny new 2011 calendar is already filling up with little gardening notations on the sides of every month.  Jan is a time to start leafing thru all your gardening magazines to get ideas for the coming season and jotting down "ta-do" lists,  garden plans, and making up shopping lists.  My goal this month is to go thru and read all my magazines which are probably well over…See More

Extreme Frost for our parts

So I ran out in the pouring, freezing rain last night and in my socks to boot.. no, no boots, just socks. I guess I could've taken the time to put on boots, but all I could think about was my baby yellow Lantana, mom's Potato Bush, purple and red Salvia, ornamental Sage, Lipstick plant, Ice plants and Raspberries. With a pile of newspaper and bags, I ran around the yard covering them all up. I was soaked thru and thru, my hair plastered to my head and FREEZING but you know what? I was relieved.…See More

New Beginnings

Posted on February 13, 2010 at 9:22am 6 Comments

With the last nasty storm, my poor little green house crumpled. Along with it, went all my favorite plants, in all my favorite pots. I came home to find nothing but a big mangled heap of plastic, metal, and broken plants and pieces. Somewhere in all this mess, are my "babies". So, I have a huge task ahead of me when the good weather holds long enough to motivate me to rebuild again and start over. Motivation I DO need, begin not only this, there are a pile of seed packets waiting… Continue

Hey there, just read some of your blogs.  I have a pretty good guide to planning a garden on my facebook page, check it out if you can.  I collect succulents here in central Oklahoma; have about 500 non-hardys stored in the greenhouse, struggling to keep them above 45deg.

thank you for the welcome. if any questions arise I might be able to answer a few. My husband Keith now deceased and I started K & L Cactus and Succulent Nursery in 1971. At one time we were probably the largest retail cactus and succulent in north USA area. It is now down to 2 greenhouses full of nice large plants. I can take pictures and email them on if interested in any particular genera or species or hybrid.

I worked up righting my greenhouse yesterday and piling up all the broken pots. I was able to salvage most of my plants although they are little pieces. Most of them are succulents, which are easy to root from pieces. Thank you for your nice comment:)
