It's been a long time.

My health has gone down hill in the past yr. I can't do much in the garden anymore. I don't volunteer at the church garden at all. I had a landscaper come and plant a few big plants in the back half of my garden to fill it in. I'm working on slowly moving some of the smaller plants to the small garden, but that could take all summer to do.We took a trip to the Olbreck gardens in Madison, WI and it was beautiful. I will post some pictures later. I'm going out in the yard today to get new picture…See More

sad yr in the garden

I haven't been here in a long time. My poor garden started out so wonderful till the squirrels moved in and killed or dug up almost everything. I look at all your pictures and look out at my poor empty garden. Now it's so cold and windy I know winter is coming. So I hope next yr will be better.

My Garden Story

I grew up helping my gram in her large garden mostly pulling weeds. Except ever Sunday after church we would cut flowers and go to the cemetery to put flowers on graves and pray for all those she loved and lost.

It wasn't till I had a home of my own that I really got bitten by the garden bug. I had large flower beds and trees all around the house both in and out. I would spend hours every day working on the beds. Even though we lived on a dead end cars would come down all summer long just to see what I had done to my garden that yr. Some would even get out of the car and ask to walk around and I loved to have them come in and talk to them about my garden.

Then 8 yrs ago I got very sick and could no longer work. We lost the house after 2 yrs. I was lucky though and found an apt that the landlord allowed me to put in a garden in my back yard. I have a picture of how the back looked before I moved in. I look at that picture and I can't believe how once again I've taken nothing and turned it into a wonderful place to relax and recover.

There is a small woods behind my apt that has a wonderful trail through it and a man made waterfall that belongs to my church. A yr after we joined the church I volunteered to take over the church courtyard. No one had taken care of it for almost 5 yrs it was over grown and bare. I would work all day almost every day, mostly on my own clearing and finding plants and flowers long lost. The courtyard is after 3 yrs of hard labor become a wonderful place for gatherings, weddings and our Ice Cream Social.

In the last year I have gotten physically much worse. The pain and fatigue has increased to the point that gardening is all but impossible. I finally had to give up working in the church courtyard. Now I can only handle the small garden in my back yard. I really miss working in my wonderful courtyard. My helpers are working hard to keep up the gardens, but they tell me they just don't have my vision or time to keep the garden like I did. So the garden is just being maintained as it is, projects I didn't' complete have been left incomplete. I don't even have the energy to supervise.

My days are filled now with my stain glass painting and when I can I work in the little garden out back. I miss being a creative gardener working in God's house.

A sad day

After working so hard on my church garden for the last 3 yrs I'm sad going there now. I know I can't do the work I once did physically but I could lead.

I'm disabled and am getting worse. I managed with help from my son and hubby to get the small garden in the back yard complete and planted this yr. I only plant bushes and perennials so that in the future I won't have to do much except enjoy it.

Yet I still take my pictures of the courtyard and watch over it. I never took… Continue

I have been checking out so many wonderful gardens and I feel like I finally found a group as crazy as I am about flowers. You also seem to feel the same way I do when your out there working in your garden. I've read it in so many different ways but it all means the same, We feel closer to God. I love sitting out in my little garden carved out of the woods and look up to the sky and think, Thank you God for giving me the ability to take your creations and make a place of peace.

Thank you. Each one of the containers gets individually wrapped in cotton fabric and tied with an small opening at the top for air circulation. Once they are all covered, every container gets moved to the corner of the deck where the walls meet. The smallest and most fragile gets put in the very center & the wisteria, Japanese maple gets put last. This allows for air circulation & protects from frost. Gardening is a lot of work as you well know but watching everything come back year after year and each year better than the last. Well then all the work is worth it.
