Carla, that looks beautiful...just like white lattice (which is pricey).  Too bad it doesn't last a long time...

Whoa! Lyn, did you say 300 bags?  You must live on pretty large acreage to plant THAT many seeds!

Beth, I'm always finding new uses for old junk.  Unfortunately, every time I throw something out (thinking I'll never use 'that') I find that someone has found a creative 're-use' for it.  It drives me…

Another storage idea I've incorporated uses baby food jars.  We've raised five children and I collected over two hundred jars and I store smallish hardware items in them.  I built a 'cabinet' of sorts that is on wheels…

I use mostly plastic mayonnaise and peanut butter jars for storage because I can see the contents before reaching for the container. In this picture, there is a fluorescent light fixture running through the middle, but you can see the jars I've…

Beth, I'd coat your painted pot with a sealer of some type and overwinter it indoors.  Also, I wouldn't plant anything into it directly, but I'd use a plastic container inside the pot and have the container sitting on a thin…

Cynthia (Cyndy), I'm not so sure I'm all that great at recycling.  My boys go through about three gallons of milk a week and most of them wind up in the recycling bin.  I do use some gallon-sized plastic milk jugs as temporary…

What can you do with an old gallon milk jug?  Cut it in half and make a pair of masks using newsprint and diluted water/glue mixture to paper mache the plastic surface.  I also used strips from an old cotton T-shirt to give one mask some…

I don't like high winds either, a few years back a tree fell onto our house and caused over $10k in damage.

Doggie Deterrent INSTALLED finally (two years later)

Posted on August 20, 2011 at 7:14pm 5 Comments

The dog problem continued and repeated warnings had no positive effect.  We finally got fed up and decided to install the dreaded fence this summer.

The first week of August found us hauling posts and renting a post-hole auger.  It was supposed to be a one-man auger, with wheels and a beam with the "bit" on one end and the engine and hydraulic pump counterbalanced on the other end.  However, in order to get any "purchase" in the soil, my wife had to sit on the beam at the bit end…

Veteran's Day presentation I gave at my daughter's school (today) Nov 10, 2010

Posted on November 10, 2010 at 3:38pm 17 Comments

I may have run slightly over my 10-minute window, because I wasn't watching my watch. The kids (7th-9th graders) were attentive the entire time (thank you Lord!). Here's (approximately) what I said:

I was standing at attention in my underwear at midnight with my head shaved. I tried to stay calm as a pack of wild-eyed Drill Instructors…

Gardening temporarily on hold...

Posted on August 11, 2009 at 7:00pm 3 Comments

I still pull an occasional weed and water my container plants, but other garden pursuits are on hold.

Why?

Three weeks ago, my DW suggested I repaint the outside of our house this summer. I'm not stupid. "Suggestions" from my DW are considered and then acted upon. Lest you think I'm hen-pecked, number two son and I had started the house-painting project two years ago, but we only completed the west side. Last summer, all my children had summer jobs so I skipped that year.… Continue

Doggie Deterrent still in question...

Posted on June 28, 2009 at 9:38am 0 Comments

While my wife was kayaking with her sister on Puget Sound (near San Juan Island), she called me during one of her breaks and inquired about the fence. I told her about the dog not bothering me while I was out there and actually seeing a deer on our property.

She thought that was nice but...didn't we still want to put the fence up? In case the neighbors got lax and let their pooch out to roam once again?

Of course, I hesitated...I hoped I wouldn't have to install it after… Continue

Doggie Deterrent no longer needed???

Posted on June 24, 2009 at 10:30pm 5 Comments

It was in this freshly mown area on the right of the gravel road, where I was planning to install the new doggie deterrent (fence).

Who would believe it?

After spending all those hours (and days) constructing fence panels in the backyard (and neglecting my garden), I arrived down at our property yesterday afternoon with our Suburban loaded.

I had my pepper spray… Continue
