"Buffalo doesn't need much water, but for getting it to germinate, the more water, the better.  If you are going to the trouble to drag a hose out to them, it would be better to hand water 5 or 10 times a day for 5 minutes for 4 or 5 days,…"

Vertical Potatoes

One potato needs to dry out. Hoping that taking the top tire off will bring this one back to life. The rest are growing well. Next year I will add more nail holds into the sides of the tires.

"Heather, you have to be patient getting prairie grasses to re-establish.  A sandy slope is the best habitat for little bluestem.  It is the the one of the big 4(indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), little…"

I've been spending the week taking out the old and exhausted and planting the new.  Instead of pulling old plants, I cut them off and lay them in a row and fold the soil back over them.  After pulling soil that has collected from the sides and corners on top of the material...I plant!

It works.  This piling method keeps my soil from compacting and gives more room.

My plants are filling in finally making it easy to keep moist...even in this unprecedented…

Cover Crop

Our odd weather patterns this year has driven me to re-think some things.  Some questions I'm asking:  How do I better protect my soil?  Are there ways to better utilize the space I have to reduce water needs?  What hardscaping do I need to do for next year?  Checking out pots and items soon to be on clearance; what would be helpful?…
