Out With the Old

I've been spending the week taking out the old and exhausted and planting the new.  Instead of pulling old plants, I cut them off and lay them in a row and fold the soil back over them.  After pulling soil that has collected from the sides and corners on top of the material...I plant!

It works.  This piling method keeps my soil from compacting and gives more room.

My plants are filling in finally making it easy to keep moist...even in this unprecedented…

Our odd weather patterns this year has driven me to re-think some things.  Some questions I'm asking:  How do I better protect my soil?  Are there ways to better utilize the space I have to reduce water needs?  What hardscaping do I need to do for next year?  Checking out pots and items soon to be on clearance; what would be helpful?…

BackYard Farmer and Master Gardener

The University of Nebraska has a Backyard Farmer program through our extension system.  It is a wealth of great information.  I download mine on ITunes on ITunes U or can also watch on You Tube.

Our growing season has been 6 weeks early which is offering many new challenges and opportunities.…
