I haven't used cover crops much since I sold my 12 acre hobby farm in 2006. Then I built the siol up with alfalfa and clovers. But I have been experimenting with recycling leaves and grass clippings  in composters and food scraps in…

The leaves are changing and falling in Louisville. Find a way to recycle their nutrients by composting them.

Starting your own plants from seeds indoors.

Posted on November 30, 2009 at 6:14pm 21 Comments

It is the time of year when our garden plants cannot grow due to lack of sunlight and too low of temperatures. But what do we grow in the long winter wait. Plants for next years garden! Instead of waiting to buy plants in the spring and not getting the varieties we want we should raise our own plants this winter!

How can we do this?

What do we need?

When should we get started?

These are the questions that this blog is about. I know there are gardeners out there… Continue

Lazagna Gardening

Posted on July 16, 2009 at 9:15am 22 Comments

Has anyone read the book Lazagna Gardening? I picked one up at Cracker Barrel and read it last summer and it stimulated my interest about ways to recycle and create good soil by attracting earthworms. So I tried a 12'x16' space this spring. I layered news paper, grass clippings, leaves, compost, and soil. Kind of like a compost pile but inside a raised bed. I let this over winter. This spring I single dug where I wanted my rows to mix the soil and the layers. I also wanted to check out the… Continue

Howard, I'm very new to this site. Your page was the first one I saw because you were from Louisville. I was so surprised that there was someone on here from Louisville and so excited because I would know someone who could anwser all of my questions about gardening and flowers as well. Looking through your photos I was so impressed. I couldn't believe how perfect everything was from landscaping to the vegetable garden and then to the preparation of the seed. You are a true artist of gardening. This is the way I have wanted to garden all of my life. I was determined to have a Perfect garden this year. I bought myself a Mathis tiller that's electric..much better for a woman. I love it. Thanks for the inspiration that it can be done. I am really exited about this site.

The new growth is corn - ears with tassles. Quite small though. I have only harvested 1 ear of corn so far and it looked like some toothless old man (very undeveloped). Not sure I know what I am doing with the corn. Have no idea what smut is. In my day, smut meant entirely something else! Seeing that I am new to gardening, it must mean something else in vegetable gardening (lol). I like the pictures of your garden. My husband and I are planning on moving ours to a different area of the back yard. May take some ideas from yours. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for your advice Howard. I am new to this and learning a lot. Got some weird stuff going on in my bed, but we've been able to harvest some lettuce, tomatoes, squash, and unedible corn. The corn is interesting - I have new growth at the base complete with corn and tassles. Not sure if it will amount to much though. Beans and peppers are taking their sweet time. Would love to grow some strawberries. Any advice there?

it is rare for us to have snow like that here so when it happens this whole city shuts down ...it is sooo funny because if everyone heres that it's going to snow a few inches they run to the grocery and buy up all the bread and stuff....and the snow only last a day by the next day it is usually all melted away .....i'm pretty sure the snow was sent here by our maker "GOD" lol
