Moving from the Northeast to New Mexico

I am an avid gardener in New Hampshire and i am going to be moving to New Mexico in May. I've never even visited the area, but i know i'm going to be in the elevations, in Farmington, and I was just wondering what the gardening was like out there. Is it all container gardens or can i actually have beautiful plants out there with all the sand? I would like some feedback because i'm very nervous about not being able to plant anything! =) Thanks so much.
