Oh pansies are my favorite flower! We can grow them here in Georgia in the winter also! But rabbits have gotten out of hand around my house and have eaten all my plants right down to the ground! Darn varmints!

Hey Stan, throw those bulbs anywhere you don't really want them to grow, you can move them later when there are so many you will need to give them away to neighbors and friends!  Kind of like iris!

Well, I stuck them and the ground in the Fall and they cme up in the Spring!  Didn't do anything special.  I may have amended the soil with some Natures Helper from Home Depot, but other than that probably nothing.

Yes, this is one of my favorite photos of the garden at a time when it loked good!  Then came several years of drought and the dreaded voles, moles and chipmunks unleashed their tunneling skills and lived high on the hosta roots!  So…

I don't like the cowbirds, English or House Sparrows because of their behaviors.  The House Wren is also one that attacks other bird nestlings.  Bluebirds are especially victimized apparently. I have pictures of a nest with 3 eggs, 1…

One of my favorites!  Had one in a pot and forgot to bring it inside before a freeze.  Here in my area they will do well in the ground but I did not have a sunny location.

Hey Gail, we had a friend when we lived in Upstate NY who was quite bald.  He used to say God only covers the ugly heads!  LOL!  I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  Lucky for this male cardinal, so does his lady!

Busy Day Today!!

Posted on June 5, 2009 at 9:31pm 1 Comment

I spent this afternoon until about, oh, 7:00 PM out in the yard and gardens. It was a LOVELY day! It was overcast all morning and early afternoon. Nice and cool (by GA standards.) Perfect for working. The skies cleared and there was a wonderful breeze. So, I planted a couple perenials. But I had to rework the space to place them where I wanted them. One is a echinacea, Big Sky "Sundown," a pretty dark coral color. The other is a l.a. hybrid lily, brindisi. It is gorgeous, a lighter coral color.… Continue

Symphony of Praise

Posted on May 31, 2009 at 10:00am 1 Comment

It is Sunday morning. Normally I would be scurrying around getting ready for church. However, I am a hospice nurse and on call this weekend. So I am enjoying breakfast on the back deck with my computer, cup of tea, the dog and the birds. They are singing their hearts out! Though we live in suburban Atlanta, we live in an older subdivision where the trees still stand. They create lots of fall and spring mess to clean up, but offer shade from the hot sun and a refuge for the birds. We have many… Continue

Joy in The Journey

Posted on May 14, 2009 at 8:30am 0 Comments

This I wrote in reply to a comment about one of my pictures. I thought it would make a good blog comment as well.

"We have lived here for 25 years. When the kids were old enough that they did not need constant supervision, I began to play in the dirt. The gardens are a labor of love that has taken about 20+ years to plant. Gardening is a journey, I never feel like I have finally arrived. It takes time and trial and error. Just when you think you are getting to a place where you… Continue

Happy May Day!

Posted on April 30, 2009 at 11:32pm 0 Comments

May 1st already! Where is the time going? Spring is progressing right along. The trees are all leafed out now. The poplars are making my husband crazy once again, as they seem to be always dropping something from them. They are very messy trees! My little terrier/poodle mix constantly brings their mess in with her. She usually comes in with something hanging from her chin. Being part terrier, her nose is nearly always to the ground. Maybe she's part Beagle.

I spent the last afternoon… Continue

Oh No! Not Hail!!

Posted on April 24, 2009 at 10:12pm 2 Comments

We had a severe thunder storm last evening. It brought with it the dreaded hail. The only good thing about it was it wasn't very large. Dime to nickle size, an occassional larger one. Most everything seemed to fare alright. The dogwood blossoms are all but gone now. The azaleas are fading. The gumpo azaleas come around late May, June. The hostas were coming up nicely. At least the one that have survived drought and under ground critters. However, hostas and hail don't get on so well. They are… Continue

Doing well here, had an episode of strong winds and drifting sleet, then 8 inches of snow. Try lining your beds with native rock edging, then building up the soil with compost, leaves etc. Don't have to dig as deep and more level areas that way. Ck your local county extension office or master gardeners for literature on dry shade for your area. I use a lot of portulaca ground cover with accents of lantana. Not sure how the lantana will mature. That's also a good staging area for yard art. I am busily planning a lot of tweaks to the yard.
