A lot of people ask about a non chemical repellent for slugs on Hostas and other plants. Don't forget Diathermies Earth. I will be giving it a try very soon, Home depot has it by: Safer, for $8 for a bag. Just don't breathe the…

I use the Scotts Eco sence iron phosphate slug killer and it workes very well for me. Twice a year if needed is all I use and if I see any new holes I just sprinkel a litle on the plant and shake it down and I know it will get rid of…

I have friends on the east coast that I can most likely get shells from. Already contacted a gal in MA. My thinking is it is long term and lazy. :) I'm broken so I pick plants that need the least care. In the spring I trim things throught out…

In my experience, slug/snail control with iron phosphate as an active ingredient works the best. It works by shutting down the slug's digestive system. You don't have to apply it after every rain; it gradually breaks down and returns to…

Try a sea food restraunt and then smash them with a brick or hammer in a bag or tub. Iuse the diathamus earth, home depot had it, and also the slug bait that is safe for pets, It workes very good.

This was brought up on the group "Houseplants" a member used shells as mulch on outdoor potted plants. And the question came to mind about using shells around the hostas to keep the slugs away. Most are naturally rough and if they are from…

Bonnie, I don't do anything to my hostas either to over winter them. I actually love the Yellow's they throw off in fall. Then the leaves lay down over their own selves to protect their roots and future sprouts. The only thing I remove is…

This is my first attempt at a compost tumbler.

The post are made of 2 - 2X6 pieces of wood,

making it a 4X6 posts (each side)

The post are not treated or painted yet, but it is functional

Each post is cemented into the ground.

***

Every thing used to make this Compost Tumbler

was recycled, or what was at hand!

***

Good things do not have to cost a lot...

Peace

Thanks Janet, and yes I do believe gardeners are some of the nicest people . I think you and your husband would just love our neck of the woods. We live in Branch Co.in southern Michigan on a chain of seven lakes. A lot of other lakes in the area also. Any of them allow canoeing ! You would love the area. And as you know you can garden just about anywhere. Are you looking for a place to relocate ? you said you are moving to Mi. Didn't know if you had a destination in mind.(and no I am not a realtor) ha ha . But I know quite a few. Where ever you decide to go I wish you the best ! Keep in touch , my canoe is always available !

I looked again couldn't find anything to match your discription. I called the natural history survey in Springfield once and their butterfly expert happed to be in the office when I called. They were very helpfull. Their number is 217-333-6880.

I guess I'm very fortunate! The nearest composte faccility to me is in Monmouth, Il.. They charge me $5 to load my truck with either mulch or composte. They fill the truck up to the top of the cab with mulch & a little over the top of the box with composte. I use @ 14 loads of mulch and 2 or 3 loads of composte a yr.. I would never beable to take care of my yard by myself if it wasn't for that facility and the reasonable price. I found my butterflies of Il. book, it was right where I left it.I couldn't find one in there that matched your discription but I looked in the audubon butterfly guide, found a giant white that met the size but didn't have the blue marking you discribed. ttul

Janet this is my thing,. I'm the cheif cook and bottle washer around here. What you see is all my fault. I'm retired and single. I have my daughter living with me and she will mow part of the lawn for me, and occasionally help with fall clean-up. But if I don't keep after it looks pretty messy. My back area gets pretty overgrown by Oct. and the killing frosts don't 'tll N0v.
