Hi..I am new to the blogging, twittering, facebooking world and I haven't mastered the ropes yet. So if anyone can give me some advice I would appreciate it.

Gardening is my faveorite thing to do besides painting art. I live in zone 5 with extremely sandy soil which is tough at times as you probably know. I just moved into a new home that my husband and I built ourselves. I have a whole yard to landscape. I spent 3 months landscaping so far and i feel like i barely put a dent in it.… Continue

Hi Jeannie ! I'm not far from you so I thought I'd say hello ! I understand about the sand too as I am close to Demotte and the river so that's what I started with 6 years ago. My best investment for my 5 acres was my chipper shredder. EVERY mowing went to my compost pile. We also have chickens so they contribute too !Now after 6 season's I have some really good black soil. We do have to buy lime to add but that's been it so far. If you ever have any ques. you can reach me at asen54@wildblue.net too . Have a Happy Easter !

Hi Jeanie,
Those yellow foliage plants are gold dust spirea, so they are actually more chartruese than yellow. These are young yet so they probably look more yellow than green. They are hardy tho, one was practically dead when we planted from lack of water and planting on a really windy day and it came back almost as big as the others.
I am a little further north than your relatives plus they are nearer Lake Michigan than I am and I think that makes their temps a little warmer. But who cares when it is 20 below?
I noticed you have a big veggie garden. Do you have any good tips for freezing tomatoes? I don't want to can them. I am making some salsa, but don't know what else to with all I have. We had to pull everything because we got frost warnings. Drat it all!

Instead of compost, I have a "scrap" pile. I have a funny corner in the yard out back and that's where everything goes. I did notice that it has a really pretty sweet potato vine growing out of it :-) I'm anxious for the leaves to turn down here. The fields are being harvested, but the leaves are still holding in there. Oh, my ex has a big Bears fan. I predicted that if they ever went to the Superbowl, that would probably be the end... I was right :-) I just love football and watch whatever game is playing. I like the Bears and whoever Brett is playing for.
