Dividing Hostas in Spring

Posted on April 29, 2012 at 5:44pm 3 Comments

Spring is a great time to divide hostas, especially those very large hostas.  It's easier to divide that giant hosta when it's eyes are just coming out of the ground then when it's a large leafed out plant.  If you can divide them before they leaf out, most of them won't even show signs that they have been divided.

Before I get into how to divide your hostas, I just want to say that despite what some of you have heard, hostas do not need to be divided.  I divide mine simply because…

Cutting Hosta in Fall

Posted on October 18, 2011 at 8:59pm 4 Comments

Many people ask me if they should cut their hostas to the ground once they start to decline in fall.  I personally think it's not a good idea to cut the hostas down for the ground in fall.  Many people use the same cutting tool on all of their hostas.  So if one of the hostas happens to be diseased (hvx or nematodes) you risk spreading it to all of your other hostas.  If you happen to be one of those people who feels the need to have everything cleaned up in fall, one way around this would be… Continue
