Iris plants from seed

Posted on May 5, 2010 at 10:21pm 3 Comments

The four iris that came up from seed all have different blooms on the same stalk. The buds were different sizes and shapes and are still opening. Some are the size of a silver dollar and some the size of a teacup. I can't get over the variations of blooms on the same stalk...some with dark purple streaks while others have only yellow with brown spots. I wonder if the variations are because they were two distinctly different varieties of Iris...one Siberian and the other a bearded iris...and who… Continue

Trying an experiment in hybridizing iris

Posted on May 4, 2010 at 10:37pm 1 Comment

I have been raising iris for many years and this year I have become interested in trying my had at hybridizing my own variety all because of a delay in deadheading the Siberian iris a couple of years ago. I vaguely remember breaking off the brown seedpods and tossing them into the bed. I usually am very good about disposing of the dead flowers before the seedpod forms because it drains the plant and I want the plant to put out more babies to fill the garden...especially in this new bed. It…

Margaret, I have just discovered that bearded iris have seed pods and yes I would be interested in trading seeds/pods. But, I need some help. The pods are a bright green right now and inside the seeds are white, round little folk like those inside okra. I suspect based on my fogging remembrances of HS Botany that the are not mature just yet. When should I harvest them and should I break them open and harvest just the seeds or keep them in the pods. Also, what do I do when to grow new plants from the seed?

Do you have Georgia Gardener's Guide by Erica Glasener & Walter Reeves? I really like it and I love Walter Reeves; he also has a show on Georgia Public TV that I enjoy.

Thank you for the nice compliment. Consider my yard a work in progress. There's lots of things I want to do with my yard and enjoy it at the same time. That is why I like to do pics to watch progress.

Well, Mother Nature is smiling down on us. I guess she heard me complaining. Next week we should have wonderful weather...lots of sunshine and warm temps. I am sooo looking forward to digging up the garden. I have all my seeds ready...so wish me luck. I'm just going to let the household chores go until the garden gets done. All that other stuff will wait. Will take you up on the advise for the iris. My peonies are just starting to open. Have to get out there and take pictures for you to see them. They are white with some red in the centers. I think they are so beautiful!! I'll bring in a few flowers to make the house smell nice too.
