Ants in my Mint

Hi All,I went out yesterday to water my mint (orange and peppermint) and my small raised island is full of ants. I don't see a mound but just black ants all over the plants. (tons) I do have rubber mulch on the dirt so it's not easy for me to see exactly what's going on under the mulch. I have had hip surgery so I really can't get down on the ground to check.
