Blizzard090202

And this is why Jody hasn't been on Gardeners Index much lately. LOL. This is our second blizzard of December (this one was Christmas Eve and Day).

Leron: I planted an annual garden for my Mom this year (she loved annuals; I'm more of a perennial gal). It made me feel wonderful. I live in northern Missouri. You asked about a flower for June. I think Oriental lilies are gorgeous and mine…

Yes, Annie, this weather has been unbelievable. Didn't make it to the state fair but covered it many times when I worked at the California Democrat. :D

Yes, sorry, Jane. Not much going on in my garden now. And school starts soon. Been battling some health issues too that have kept me inside. But hope to get that lasagna garden started this fall so it's ready for next spring. Weather has been…

It was a little bit more orange than shows in photo, but yes, it did look like the photos I've seen of forest fires. It sounded awful and we got some bad wind, but heavy rain didn't last more than 10 minutes. Usual Missouri storm.

We got a storm that looked and sounded horrible but in the end not too bad. I'll post some photos of our sky after the storm, though. It was amazing. Bright red -- almost like fire. I missed our double rainbow though.

Yes, the Kansas/Missouri group was more active so I went there. I live closer to some people in Kansas than some in MIssouri. I don't care if we get down to one group but would like to keep the Kansas/Missouri group going.

The daylilies are here! The daylilies are here!

Posted on June 29, 2009 at 3:04pm 2 Comments

I have been staring at those developing little buds for what seems like forever and came home from work today to discover two had finally bloomed!!! From the profusion of buds should be many more.

Also, a couple coneflowers. Love those things.

My garden is small but apparently well planned (unintentionally) as the season has been an ongoing showing - some come, then go, then new ones come! Love it! :D

Wacky Weather

Posted on June 27, 2009 at 9:01pm 2 Comments

It has been so hot here the last few days that I haven't been outside much in "the little flower garden that could." When I planted it though, I chose the "hardy, no-care" plants! :D There's a slight cool front coming in though tonight, so that's help cut the humidity. Daylilies are numerous and should bloom soon; same with purple coneflower.

But despite the heat we've had round after round of storms, usually overnight, with blazing heat then during the day. Just a few nights ago, we… Continue

Now she's composting - God help her!

Posted on June 18, 2009 at 6:59pm 5 Comments

I bought a compost bin recently and got around to putting it together today. Now, I know, some of you are going to say that I could have built my own. But trust me - I'm not a "build-it-yourself" kind of gal. If it doesn't "snap" together, I might as well give up.

And, aside from the fact that it was the most humid day yet this year today, I got it up with no problem. I was melting at the end. Nasty out there today in Missouri! (As we like to say here - it's not the heat, it's the… Continue

There's hope for my daylilies

Posted on June 14, 2009 at 11:23am 1 Comment

I've been a bit worried about my daylilies as there are tons blooming around here and mine didn't even have any buds. My local garden center owner said not to worry, that we're a bit behind the season. And I did plant them a bit later last year (end of June, first of July, can't remember). But still, I've been worrying.

I was out pulling weeds and pruning things this morning and noticed that my daylilies have little buds showing up. Yea! They're still small but my variety must be a… Continue

Out of Control

Posted on June 11, 2009 at 8:59pm 8 Comments

Okay - this gardening thing is getting out of control.

Today I bought a dwarf Korean lilac. I had just gone to visit our local nursery because I was bored and told the owner there (it's a 'we grow 'em, we know 'em' kind of place - great!) I was looking for a shrub to block my small patio from my neighbors. But I really like my neighbors so thought a fence or something like that would be too rude. I've always loved lilac bushes. She suggested this dwarf bush because my area isn't that… Continue

Hi Jody,
Thanks for your kind comment about my glad. I feel the same as you do about the daylillies. I had a bunch pop open this morning. Our local library had a variety of daylillies planted around the front of it...a few weeks ago they took them up and planted a butterfly garden for the kids. My friend did the labor and brought me a dozen or more of the lilly plants they discarded. I am having fun watching to see them open so I know what they are.

Hi Jody, thanks for commenting on the delphinium. I think it is called Royal Aspirations. I have one stalk left that will be producing seeds. If you like I can send you some. Let me know.

Hi Jody - thanks for adding me. I have heard that it's really hot in many places in US right now. Our winter is much colder than usual this year... I wish I could send you some cooler weather!
