Hi Karen,
Thanks for the compliments on my yard. I enjoy it so much--especially this time of year. As far as the plants I use, I've experimented and used trial and error to find which plants work best based on my soil. Some areas of my yard have a high clay content and tend to stay moist. Other areas are dry, so it's taken me a while to figure it all out. I love calladiums and have found they work almost anywhere as long as they don't get too dry. I also have mexican petunias, vinca (periwinkles), impatiens, lantana, canna lilies, elephant ear palms, dianthus, different types of salvia, and mandevilla. This year I planted yellow pom pom marigolds as a border around the front of my house, and so far, they are doing well. I also planted knock out roses which do well here. Unlike most roses, they are low maintenance and have a long blooming season--from spring to late fall.
