Organic growing and buying local

I am a true believer of using natural fertilizers and insecticides. I have grown a successful garden by using natural products and companion plants except for my lettuce that I grow in bins. Any successful hints on how to grow romaine in bins without using the nitrogen pumped miracle grow? Water amounts? Sun?
