Cucumber bullets

Hi all, I planted a small veggie patch this year, but got a very late start - end of June. I've gotten 4 summer squashes that were hard as rocks, 1 good zucchini and a couple of eggplants, a huge bushel of basil that is bolting and then there are these really weird, nuclear cucumbers I don't dare touch.  They're fat, almost round and GOLD in color? Any ideas as to why I have golden footballs for cukes?  It's not just a couple of them - all ofthem came in this way. Thanks, looking forward to…See More

New to the state, new to the site

Hi,I've just joined this web site - then after finding Zone7 I found this group which is even more appropriate for me.I have (for the first time ever) finally got a large totally sun exposed area to devote to gardening.Number one problem is the deer population. I know fencing with a 6 - 8 foot fence is the more successfull way to avoid they're damage but this method is also the most costly... I could stake my dog's lead into the ground of the veggie patch but he likes veggies too so I'd just be…See More

One of my favorite nurseries is over your way - Fairview. It's large has a good variety of plants, and the staff are knowledgable.

I read your post about soil. I was amazed at what I found here 25 years ago. I came from the MidWest with rich soft top soil. This clay and sand doesn't look like much, but NC has a broader variety of native plants than any other state in the union. Natives are a good place to start and you can find them at the farmers markets. My gorgeous hibiscus with 9" flowers all summer long and purple folliage is a great example. There are many ways to enrich the soil: buy cow manure, nicely bgged at Lowes, and work it into the soil; and rotted leaves or compost is great. I have a small raised bed for tomatoes, herbs and peppers - I filled the frame with bags of top soil and enrich it each year just before planting. Good Luck!
