my photo is all stretched. What causes that. makes the birds a bit 'longer' than they really are.

I couldnt get very close to these birds but there were hundreds of them up in the trees and on the river bank. I saw quite a few in the water also. Anyone have an idea of what type of bird they are? Duck maybe?

Randy, really? The pelicans stay around here? DO you know where they are migrating from? All 3-400 left couple days ago. Congregated in a large open field than just took off. I have to mention about the rabbit problem here. We have a dog on our…

Into the sunset

Posted on January 2, 2011 at 9:10pm 5 Comments

I had to drive a couple hours today to the wake of one of my many uncles who passed away last week. 11 children in my mother's family and Phil was the second to last surviving brother-in-law. Five uncles gone in the last nine years including my father. It was a time of reuniting with many relatives paying their respects and also a time of reflection as one cant help but do when there is a death.

I have trouble staying awake when I drive and with my knee problems driving wasnt very…

Slowing down...

Posted on December 31, 2010 at 11:20am 0 Comments

I always find myself on New Years, just moving in slow motion..doing lots of thinking. The past year has been filled with much pain, stress, frustrations, difficulties, hard work, emotionally heated hours with tenants, family....

That is what is so good about winter. It slows me down. I look out the window and reflect. How can you not when you see such cold beauty? Just sitting there begging us to look and think.  Nothing is growing, nothing is green. Hail the whites and browns and…

The old table

The scars carved in the hard oak

Read like Braille beneath my fingertips,

Telling stories from generations of family

endless nights of homework,

frosting holiday cookies,

home cooked meals…..

Sharing, Living, Dreaming

Just as my mother, daughter and I did that early… Continue

working the field

Posted on November 9, 2010 at 7:36pm 4 Comments

Such a gorgeous warm sunny day. Unlike the cold wet windy day ten years ago. My dad passed away in the early evening. I got up that morning and spent the day in my sweats down in the basement working on my snowman crafts....for some reason wanting to feel isolated and hidden.

Dad was a man of the earth, a farmer. Tall and strong and a gardener of the fields. From him I learned about appreciating the small wonders and to respect nature.…

First freeze

Posted on November 1, 2010 at 8:49am 3 Comments

Had our first freeze a few days ago. What I love about that first time, is to take a walk through the woods and listen to all the green leaves left on many trees---fall. Sounds like rain. My dog and I did just that the other morning. I had many photo ops but Hogan is persistent in moving on and smelling and seeing and checking things out. So many things still I would like to get done out in the garden but too many other things calling to me. Today my oldest baby turns 26. My second born…

No, my Chow, Daggett (because he looked like the robot dog called Daggetts in Battlestar Gallactica) passed away a about 6 years ago.  He was a really sweet dog that I rescued.  He was loyal to whoever was in the house.  He would sit on anyone's  feet.  He was also a "red".   So far, all of the red chows that I have met have been fairly friendly.  Black chows, I keep my hands in my pockets.  I have decided that I just can't have a dog at this time in my life.  Maybe someday when I retire, I might feel I have the time to give to a dog again.

Kristin-Sorry to say I did. I just bought them about 2 weeks ago at our local nursery. My friends here on GI were talking about them and when I saw them at the nursery I couldn't help myself.

I see all of these folks starting on their gardens and we have snow piles 5' high.  I'm starting to get a little envious.  I must say, I'd rather have the snow than the ice storms that hit south of us.
