"You are right Sharon. This area is thickly wooded, not a garden, so its got some "natural" stuff going on. I'm just attempting to augment the natives. Plus deer won't touch the Hellebores."

Planted this in the woods next to a dear friends house last spring. Went to check on it a few days ago and it looked so happy...just no blooms.

Was surprised to see you were from Carter County...sorry, wasn't sure when you sent the friend request.  Was so busy doing yard work, didn't go on GS for a week or so.  Usually, do all my work in the day and go online at night.  Used to go on GS more when i could share the pics on my FB wall but now they're just thumbnails to share on FB so don't go on GS as much in the warm weather.  Plus summer is so busy with flowers & veggies & lawn.  Am from MI so I love the mountains here, came in '94.  Will check your pics now, glad you visited the vine group.

Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus Sends Me to Market!

Posted on June 7, 2012 at 9:30pm 0 Comments

Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV) has claimed one of my tomato plants. First time to lose a tomato plant. It came on very suddenly. All seemed good on Sunday. But Monday afternoon I notice several branches in top portion of a Celebrity hybrids were black to a very dark purple color and very wilted. There were also black streaks on the stems. I cut off the diseased portion and ran to the Co-Op to confirm a hopeless situation. I removed the entire plant and tossed it into the trash…

Rose Rosette Virus Hits Florence, Alabama

Posted on May 22, 2012 at 2:02pm 1 Comment

This morning a neighbor asked me to look at his roses. I was afraid of what I might see having learned about the arrival of rose rosette in our part of the country. Sure enough, my neighbor has 3 roses infected with the rose rosette virus. I could go into a lot of detail about what causes this and how to deal with it. Basically, it makes your rose bushes ugly and then they die. Since this is a virus, there is not a treatment.

This virus was in the Huntsville/Decatur area last…
