Gardener's Prayer

The sun is just rising over the horizon,
shafts of light brighten the darkness,
as the light of day once more graces this earth.
My heart feels deep gratitude
for this earth created by my use.
My thankful heart opens my senses,
and expands my awareness of all around me!
Look at the beautiful greenery!
The trees, shrubs, plants, even the weeds,
they're beautiful!
See the fruits & vegetables
produced by plants of this earth for my use.
The flavors, the textures, the colors!
The plants are nourished by this earth
just as I am.
They grow where they are planted,
and need water, sun and nourishment.
Just as I do as a human living on this earth.
But I have to work by the sweat of my brow
to provide a good environment for these plants to grow.
I am becoming like God.
I am a child of God,
having success thru my efforts
caring for my little patch of earth,
working by the sweat of my brow
all the days of my life tilling the earth.
As I work,
appreciation for my efforts,
and the blossoming earth around me
fills my heart with joy,
I pray as I work in my garden,
and then leaning on my hoe,
I see shafts of light illuminate the greenery,
as once more I feel the sun's warmth,
blessing my garden.

Our Dog Backyard Transformed into an Edible Garden Paradise

Hi all!

I moved to Northern Virginia 10 years ago from Maryland. Nothing but shale rock to put the roots into! Now I LOVE rock, but I prefer it above the ground. So disappointing to an enthusiastic gardener. I had to bring in hardscape to raise the beds and dump truck load after load of rich black topsoil later, we finally are getting somewhere! My raised beds will soon be filled with my… Continue

Have-A-Heart Trapping Groundhogs

Posted on May 9, 2009 at 11:30am 2 Comments

I caught this BIG guy very quickly using these simple bait and trapping techniques with the Have-A-Heart Trap. I have caught and relocated a total of 5 to date! Before you start have a relocation plan and place already planned. I take mine a minimum of 12 miles away to a place where gardens, people and buildings do not exist. They prefer meadows on the edge of woodlands. I know water is near by. It is against the law to release into parks or private… Continue

Mason Bees

The orchard mason bee (Osmia lignaria) is a gentle beneficial insect that has potential as a pollinator of apples, cherries, and other tree fruits. It is found throughout most of North America, particularly in wooded areas but often around homes in towns and cities. Reputed a 80 percent effective pollinator.

Homeowners sometimes become concerned when… Continue

Thanks for thinking of me. I'm getting stronger but need to get doing more.  I'm glad your thinking of the smell of dirt in the spring, too. I'm so far behind on my garden clean-up. My plans for next year are just to thin out the plants I have, but with these knees I'm not going to add any more beds. There's enough work as it is! I looked at your pictures again that you'd posted in Sept. and I'd like spring here now!
