Laying out the back yard..

We have been busy every weekend for the past month. We bought a metal shed thinking it couldn't be that hard to put together...we were WRONG..and will never attempt that again! Lesson learned but it is finally done. Last night I got out my orange spray paint and marked off my vegetable garden. Hopefully we will get that plowed up today so I can get my plants in the ground on Sunday. I have got my rain barrels put together and now need to get them set up under my downspouts. I have been really…See More

Spring is in the air!

The last two weeks have been busy for sure! We are getting warmer every day and now the rains are coming. I have my rain barrells and hope to have them doing their job by the end of the weekend. We have our tomato, green onion, watermelon, cantaloupe and green bean seeds started. Anxious to get the snow peas, corn, cucumbers and potatoes going. I have been drawing out the yards so that i can make the best use of my space. This weekend we will butcher the roosters and start putting in the posts…See More

The last time I wrote here we were just marking off our garden. Our FIRST garden ever. It has been an experience, both good and bad. First of all our soil is more of a clay so we have decided to have some topsoil and compost put in after the last veggie is picked. We have decided to fence it off as our chickens, although great for fertilizing and keeping the bugs down, are enjoying our veggies before we get to them. I am happy to say though that we have grown some massive zucchini and it my…

Impatiently waiting....

Today we hit 45 degrees...may not sound like much to some but for those of us who have been hovering around the 20's for so long it was beautiful. The chickens were so busy they had to be called in tonight. I could almost hear my kids as teenagers when they used to grumble under their breath! I have been trying to decide whether I want to start in the front or the backyard this year. Have called…

Lisa I was born and raised in Missouri-Kansas City until I was 12. I remember how beautiful the state was. My family liked to travel by car so I got to see a lot of it.

My childhood home is where I got my love for gardening.

Here is a Ranunculus from my garden for you.

Hi Lisa....welcome to GI. With so many members now on this site, it is hard to catch all that join. Today I happened to log in and read your new blog post right off. I thought i was reading about a dream I have had for years. I too am from the midwest, grew up on a livestock farm, very simple life learning how to work hard and be practical. I have been married now for 28 yrs and have three children almost grown (meaning they have moved out but arent totally self reliant) We live in a very large town here in Iowa. I swore I would never live in town and yet we have been here for 24 yrs. I dream of being back out in the country, living simply and growing what we need....having animals and yes, horses again. I cant wait to follow you on here. Welcome back to the midwest!
