The Restoration of a Garden and Yard

We moved to a rental house this past March after selling our large home and downsizing. The yard was once a garden paradise, you can see it in the mature plantings, but has been neglected for the last three or four years. I am trying to bring back…

Starting AGAIN Feb.2012

Posted on February 15, 2012 at 3:30pm 3 Comments

It is only the middle of Febuary down here in the Gulf Coast area but spring is just around the corner, hovering.  The weather gurus do not predict any more freezing temps here, our last average frost date is March 1st, but according the them, there are no jet stream propelled artic blasts headed our way.  So, while I know I am taking a chance here, basing my gardening start on the weather people I am starting anyway.  It has been so mild many things did not die at all, some are still…

Heat, Dead and Dying racks, Heat, and more Heat

Posted on August 7, 2011 at 12:57pm 5 Comments

Yesterday I had to get my car serviced so while I was waiting I walked over to Lowes for AC filters.  Of course I had  to spend a great deal of time in the nursery, wishing some of this heat would go away and it would rain.  They had racks and racks of what I call "dead and dying" and there were some good bargains.  Everything but the 3-gallon Buddleias were .10 cents.  Oh, and the three inch moss roses and Purslaine were .5 cents.  I bought three butterfly bushes for my big ticket items,…

Corkscrew willow???

Posted on May 4, 2011 at 11:23am 5 Comments

Hi all.  I have a question for the group-hopefully someone will know.

About six weeks ago I was given a lovely batch of flowers from my husband on our anniversary.  Part of the decorations included several long thin sticks of what I think is corkscrew willow.  By the time the very fresh flowers wilted and were thrown out these shoots had begun to root so I saved them in a vase of water.  They are very rooted now, and have green leaves all up and down.  I do not think this will grow…

Early summer, Topsy-Turveys and draught.

Posted on April 27, 2011 at 2:55pm 0 Comments

Thought I would spend the afternoon inside today.  It is getting hot out there now and I makes me sad to see the wilted bushes and grass everywhere.  Our little rental house has a big big yard, about two acres.  It is planted and landscaped from street curb to pasture fence line.  The builders of the home put in an elaborate underground watering system with buried water hoses and spiggots popping up all over.  I guess they did that so the totally inadaquate water well would not have to pull…

I used to have a cat names Smokey!!! He was all gray, and it is funny because I lived with my Sister and her cat was named "Gray Kitty", and she had 6 kittens, they used to play and I don't know if you've ever seen that, but they run and hit and connect and roll around together. It is one of the cutest things ever. I chose the only gray one. That was before and during my first pregnancy in 1975. Thanks for writing. I hope the drought stops. Marian

I don't have an answer on your plant, but I wanted to tell you that the brown sounds like the desert Southwest at all times. Oh1 Oh! I bet horses are a lot of work, but I would trade the work just to ride with you a couple times, and see a colt grow some. I have been bitten by the travel bug along with the Gardening bug. I would be in a state in that humidity, even though I was raised in Redding, Ca., 118 degrees (my computer doesn't have a degree symbol, bummer), I have never lived in a humid climate. I would so love to see you & your garden, you sound so interesting and we would have some serious laughing just walking around. My favorite thing is laughing my a.. off with my kids or friends. Eating, gardening, on my feet moving, working at whatever, I love being crazy busy. Makes life more. I give more value to my deceased Daughter's memory by living ( I just figured that out), since she was not able to live hers past 27. Thanks for writing, Marian

I am not familiar with humidity, but doesn't it help bring moisture to plants? Oh, I absolutely could not live in a humid climate. My inner temp. control is broken, I am serious, the heat, well, lets say you wouldn't want to see me after I have been out working in my garden. 50% you say. OMG. That is the first time I have used that abbreviation.

I live in Sparks, NV., next door to Reno. High elevation Desert. Cold, below 30 winters, no Spring this year, from 30 to 80, and I am not kidding. Nice fall though, and I have a tree that has every color in fall. Beautiful. A lot blooms in the cold though, starting with the hundreds of Daffodils I have. Very good for lavender, goldenrod, hummingbird mint, iris, glads, (one of my favorite cutting flowers), coreopsis, elecampane, herbs of most culture appreciate the dry weather, so I have started studying herbs medicinally and for prevention in cooking. I have phlox, clematis, tomatoes, the list goes on. I have lots of pots for the things like the Begonias that I wanted for my porch display this year. A lot of my peppers are in pots, they do better in there than in ground, and I have a few reservoir pots, that save things like tomatoes and baby carrots that need constant water. The humidity level here is usually below 5, so when it gets higher we feel the humidity which people in humid parts of the country probably think is funny. Is it humid where you live? I plant for wildlife, birds mostly, although bunnies and squirrels frequent my yard. Like you I would really have to study to name every plant. I have some groundcovers on my hill (the garden thorn in my side), that I can't think of the name of just now. Got them and lot's of my plants at High Country Gardens. Going to see if my camera will take a photo of my raised veg beds and the HILL, It has been tempermental lately. Thanks for the friendship.

HI Lisa, I live in Katy. Don't worry orchids are resilliant. I've done some things to mine I'm not proud of, lack of water being one of them. I'm finding Texas a challenge for gardening, I think I"m going to have to invest in some self watering pots! The rain keeps missing Katy.
