Winter Sowing

Winter Sowing is an easy seed germination method that allows you to start many seedlings for little cost. During the Winter months seeds are sown into mini-greenhouses that you make yourself from recycled containers, such as milk jugs, soda and juice bottles, take out food containers, etc.  After sowing, the mini-greenhouse is placed outside to wait for the end of Winter. The seeds will begin to germinate at their own right time when weather warms. (Courtesy of WinterSown.Org)See More

Tomato Blight

Posted on September 9, 2009 at 6:36pm 5 Comments

Well seems our tomatoes have fallen victim to what is called late tomato blight. From what I've read on the internet it is widespread throughout the country. Had a bumper crop of tomatoes that I just had to throw away. Very upsetting, first time this has ever happened to me in the many, many years of gardening. The tomatoes have a gray, greasy spot on them and they just rot quickly. I cut back all the dying leaves on a few of the plants so see if the plants improve with new shoots. Probably not… Continue

Yippee It Rained

Posted on August 8, 2009 at 8:54am 1 Comment

Finally, we had a lot of much needed rain yesterday. I wasn't even upset that I took a day off work and it rained. I felt like going outside and jumping around I was so happy. But thought better of it, didn't want break any body parts:) Today it is going to be overcast, 92 and humid and tomorrow even hotter. Once the sun comes out, all the plants should be very happy. Today I'm going to weed which should be a snap now that the ground is saturated and I'll be a muddy mess but a happy muddy mess.… Continue

New Rose Bed

Help me decide. Do I keep this as a rose bed or incorporate some perennials? By the way the pillars look tilted but they aren't, just the angle of the photo.

Garden Weeding

Posted on July 11, 2009 at 7:07pm 0 Comments

Well, we finally had some good rain yesterday...not that drizzly stuff we've been getting lately. So it was off to the veggie garden to pull up weeds. We had put down roll roofing in the aisles so most of the weeds were creeping up from underneath. After the rain, the weeds came out nice and easy. Wasn't able to get in the yard at all this past week since I hurt my back last weekend. Walked like I had a pole stuck up my rear and was quite painful. But after resting it, using the heating pad,… Continue

Rain But Not Enough OF It!

Posted on July 4, 2009 at 2:16pm 1 Comment

Well this isn't the way I planned to spend the 4th of July, stuck in the house because it has been raining or should I say drizzling all day. Forced me to clean the house LOL. There hasn't been enough rain to do any good but enough so no gardening today, but there's always tomorrow. If the weatherman is right it is going to be sunny and 83.

We are going to a neighborhood party this afternoon. Think this year it is going to be in their garage instead of outside:)

Maris, I had to tell you that I was also the "neighborhood" tomboy. I never played with babydolls...you could find me out there with the boys playing football, baseball, and riding bikes. I had quite a collection of Baseball cards and wish I had them now. I could have sold them and retired...had many good ones. Checked on the fish in my pond again tonight...2 of them are looseing there tails and color is just awful. Doubt if they make it. Still nothing from the police but do know they are watching them. Have a great day tomorrow and a great weekend in your garden.

Hi Maris it was nice hearing from you. At least your weather has been a little cooler. Here in Tx it has been over 100 for weeks and hasn't rained for months. Even though I water my garden it looks sad. Oh well I just do my best to keep them happy. I noticed you are from Downers Grove. I used to live there on Dearborn Pkwy. Having a garden there was easier i'll tell ya. Hopefuly we can keep in touch as the school year begins. Keep on sharing...I look ofrward to it.
