What kind of gardening do you like to do?
Vegetable/flower
How much time do you spend a week on average in your garden when weather permits?
Until my wife yells at me to come inside.

A little bit about myself

Little background. Spent 11 years in college learning about plants, their environment, and all the fascinating interactions between the two...got a BS and MS in Forest Ecology from Ohio State and Univ of GA respectively, and another Masters in Forestry from Colorado State, in Geographic Information Systems/Remote Sensing. So while I used to work outside everyday identifying, measuring, and just playing with plants, I now pretty much work with them from space and how they provide habitat for birds. So my only connection to my past life as a botanist/ecologist is my garden. Just moved into a new home March of '08. This website will serve as my journal for the garden I put in and all the other landscaping I do at the new house. Enjoy!

New Photos and Update

Posted on May 24, 2010 at 12:40am 0 Comments

Just uploaded new photos of the summer 2010 garden. Built a trellis for the Jenny Lind melons today. Temperature had to be about 100 degrees today and 99% humidity...egads, 4 more months of this! Tomatoes are doing a lot better...had some fungus dealing quite a bit of leaf damage, but they seem to have outgrown the fungus. Reseeded the cucumbers and squash due to the crappy germination rate. Hops are doing well...except for the Centennials, they all died about two weeks after planting. Guess… Continue

Pics coming soon!

Greetings fellow gardeners! I plan on taking pics of this seasons garden this weekend. I've got about 20 tomato plants of different varieties, three kinds of cucumbers, two kinds of beans, three kinds of squash, 15 different peppers, okra, two kinds of watermelon, and 5 kinds of cantaloupe...not to mention the three (or rather two...the Centennials bit the dust) kinds of hops. Stay tuned!

Well...my baby tomatoes look like they're going to do ok. I had originally started 35 individuals from seed back in January...had about 8 die on me from damping off, and then I went to Portland, OR for a Python Scripting programming class. I get home and there are only 8 plants left alive. Not sure what the wife did...but I think I'll try to avoid traveling while I'm starting plants. Such is life!

I need to start my pepper seeds...I should have started them a few weeks ago. I'm… Continue

For those few that read my garden blog...I apologize profusely for my lack of posting! We've been pretty busy here at Chez Aquilegia. Unrelated to the garden...we've started the process of doing an international adoption! We're looking to add a 2-4 year old boy from Poland to our family...hope he likes veggies!

My winter garden is still going pretty strong. I will post some pics later this week. I've got broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, collards, swiss chard, several lettuces, cauliflower,… Continue

May 9-10 Weekend

Posted on May 11, 2009 at 11:17pm 0 Comments

Whew...what a muggy weekend! Spent the morning saturday finishing weeding the new shade bed and amending the soil with composted manure and some FlowersAlive fertilizer. Planted a split-leaf philodendron, a tree fern, and a false solomon seal. Also direct seeded a wildlflower mix with some columbine, coneflower, nasturtiums, and foxgloves. Wish I had done this earlier, gonna take about a month or so for the flowers to fill in, and another month or so to actually get some flowers...it should… Continue
