I WOULD SUGGEST YOU TRY A FEW BULBS AND SEE HOW THAT WORK.  I KNOW HOW IT IS TO MASS PLANT AND LOSE  ALL OF THEM... BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT, VERY EXPENSIVE... GOOD LUCK, HAPPY GARDENING.

It sure does seed itself.    We have a species in Colorado that spreads everywhere.    Never have to buy it.

Probably spread by birds or other wildlife. "A dioecious shrub which requires both male and female plants for fruit production. Fruit is an edible, black berry which can be used in jellies, preserves and pies."

Looked it up, I think you all are right!  Thank you.  Do they self seed readily?  My friend claims that she did not plant this.

My friend found this volunteer in her yard.  Several just popped up here in her yard in zone 5 southern Wisconsin.  Right now each plant is about three feet tall.  It smells of clove.See More
