Another great tip to consider! I love cherry tomatoes - don't know why I never think about the little varieties, I like those better anyway, easy to pop into salads.

I have had success with cherry tomatoes and a few regular tomato plants in containers. I am adding crushed egg shells to my tomatoe containers this year as they were suggested for their calcium content. I dry the egg shells out for a few days, the…

So my dietitian is making me modify my diet to a more " Mediterranean style". This means upping my veggie intake. I think this may just be the push I need to put more effort into container gardening vegetables. Radishes, tomatoes, peppers…

Have you tried self-watering pots or watering bulbs? Or even just using weed fabric cut to size or decorative rocks to cover the top of your soil? I'm wondering if that would help. The self-watering pots work pretty well for me, even during…

I also LOVE the self-watering pots from Walmart. Cheap and water-efficient compared to others. Works great since my patio has no water source and I have to haul it back and forth from the kitchen sink in my apartment. I never thought of doing cherry…

Lettuce in containers??? What kind containers?? Herbs have been the easiest thing for me not to kill. Not that I can't grow stuff ... I just get lazy about dragging cans of water to my patio. Apartment-container growing is very challenging!…

I use no pecticides. It is my understnding that many plants will send out alarm pheremones when under stress, which attracts the bad bugs? The only major pest I have is the 4 lined plant bug and japenese beatles. I am a composter and use organic…

Sounds like it has been a tough year. I joke that I need to Xera Scape (desert gardening). I almost always look at the water needs of all plants before I put them in. The past two summers here in my county we had droughts, and I have a well, and so…

Winter blues

So its been quite awhile since I've made any posts on the forum ... and just about that long since I've made any progress with my patio/container gardening. Much of what I put in during the spring has long since died or been squashed into oblivion. My roses succumbed to disease. I never could figure out what I did wrong with the beautiful fushia but it met a most untimely death as well. All the mint is gone ... okay that one was entirely my fault as I kept forgetting it was in an overhead pot…See More

Apartment gardening updates

Posted on July 9, 2009 at 2:29am 0 Comments

I just planted radish seeds a couple weeks ago and have some very respectable looking seedlings popping up like crazy. I'm also going to buy some pepper plants soon and see how they fair on my patio.

There is one container I have no idea what is in it because I THOUGHT it was cilantro .... but it is definately not cilantro! Maybe echinacea? The're getting pretty tall so I have no clue what seeds I threw in that container. Which makes me wonder where exactly I threw the cilantro seeds… Continue

Surprise!!

My husband surprised me today by buying me a Lemon Basil to add to my "Pledge" section of the garden as he calls it - its the container with my "lemon" herbs in it. 11 years later he's finally figured out how to keep me happy - shove a plant at me and get outta my way! :)

Aptartment Patio Gardening

Posted on May 30, 2009 at 2:36am 2 Comments

I made head way with setting up a garden on my apartment patio today. I scored some great deals on pots at Lowes, as well as buying several herbs and flowers. I bought my first rose plant today, as well as my first fushia (sp?). I love white roses with red tipped petals and just could not resist buying it, especially as cheap as it was for a quite healthy and pretty good sized plant. The fushia (I know I'm spelling that wrong agh!) my… Continue

Misty,

I bought my first roses Fall 2002. A freind was with that has worked at nurseries and suppose to know a LOT about plants. He treid to talk me OUT of buying any roses, told me they were very hard to keep alive and they had to be sprayed.

ALL HOG WASH! I STILL HAVE ALL 4 ROSES AND THEY ARE VERY PRETTY. You lving in CA have an avantge on the growth of roses or any plants. The last time I was in CA a freind had roses the size of plants and she said she NOTHING special to them.

You will need to spray them and just water. Water the base and try to not wet the leaves and flowers.

YOU WILL ENJOY this rose for a LONG time.

I have had roses in Dec here in Nashville. YOU CAN DO IT!

I know the feeling about having to leave things at the nursery )-= Although I'm sad, my pocketbook is happier. LOL
My mom is selling her house, so I've been "adopting" a lot of her perennials. My next step is to try to convince my husband to move some shrubs from her house. She's got quite a few medium sized bushes that I want, including 2 Persian lilacs, a few hydrangea, and a few really large butterfly bushes.

Hi Misty! Oh, I 'm so honored to be the first person to leave you a comment! I love the picture of the cactus with the yellow flower, and also the Poinsettia.
I'm just writing to let you know I left you some more responses to your questions on the Herb group.
I also just started a new group called"Sharing". I'd love for you to join us!
