Two full days of weeding in 62 degree weather.  Really made some progress.  Found two volunteer garlic bunches.  The soil is perfect for working.  I have Spring fever!  Can't wait to start planting my starts.…

Hole is 1 1/2-2" in diameter.  Too big for a mouse, too small for a rabbit. i'm thinking mole or vole.  Our squirrels are also too fat for that hole.  It's just loose soil in a pile.  So voles eat grubs, which is a…

Speaking of rodents, I have some burrowing thing that is loosening up the soil for me, but I don't want it here when I put in crops. Don't know what it is, but it's a digger. Any ideas on how to identify and rid the yard of the thing?…

Wow!  We here in northern CA have not had a drop of rain in 6 weeks.  Before that it was just a smidge.  Nomally I cannot work the soil until late March because it is too wet, but with rain in the forecast later this week, I decided…

Welcome Jack.  I think most of us are in winter mode with  holiday distraction, travel, family, shopping, cooking.  Usually pretty lively.  Not all of us are organic.  I try to be because I trade organic produce for services…

Nancy, Anaheims are the green chiles used in chiles rellanos.  They are roasted and peeled and stuffed with cheese or meat filling.  They are also used in huevos rancheros, scrambled eggs with Mexican seasonings. They range from mild to…

Thanks Bob, I have tried the water thing. . . temporary fix.  Do you have a name for a product?  We are freezing this week, and I thought that might curtail the problem.  No bromilliads here.  It hasn't hurt the tree.…

Christmas baking is done!  Pot roast in the oven with garden fresh potatoes and the last of the carrots.  Threw some of those frozen peppers in there from summer.  Smells so good in here right now!  Can one of you masters tell me…

Yes!  That's it!  It was beautiful, but I made a soup from it and the reaction from my husband when he walked in and smelled it was less than complimentary.  I thought I could get away with serving cauliflower; not so much.

Wow, William.  What a find!  I planted "broccoli" one time from plants from the school horticulture class fundraiser.  It turned out to be this weird neon yellow and purple spiraled cauliflower.  My family hates…

Yeah Ivan, it was really clean, but I couldn't bring myself to cook it after the detergent and baking soda and spin cycle.  Organic? Not so much.

Muriel, sorry to hear the pepper spray burned your plants (AND you still have caterpillers!) UGH.

Just my humble opinion, and certainly use your own judgement with what you're comfortable using, but I've used dish soap (2tsp. to 1 quart water) sprayed on my plants and had good results in ridding the aphids and caterpillers, if you'd like to try that.

I personally never use anything that I wouldn't eat or could rub on my skin.  (Cayenne pepper if too concentrated will burn your skin)

Hope this is helpful.  I know it's frustrating!

Muriel, there are bugs with feet, called assassin bugs that are good bugs too. They are bright orange and black. They will not attack you and as a matter of fact, are afraid of your finger. They also eat bad bugs. They reproduce on tomato plants and other vines in the garden. Don't kill them, they are good.
