Jasmine pod or seed????

An eldery friend gave me this seed after he came home from Texas. He said it was Jasmine. I've tried to research it to no avail. It's huge and rattles inside like there are seeds in there.

"I live in Spotsylvania, Va (Zone 7) and due to poor health and hospital stays, I haven't cut down my one butterfly bush that was tall and gangly this past season. Can I still prune it or is it too late? How about my hydrangea bush?"
